Every beginner asks the same question about air pumps, and it is almost always the wrong question. "Do I need bubbles?" is not the issue. The issue is whether there is enough dissolved oxygen in your water for the fish you keep — and in a UAE flat in July, that question has a very different answer than it does in a European winter.
Here is the short version: bubbles do not add much oxygen to your water. What they do is move the surface, and the surface is where gas exchange actually happens. Once you understand that, you can decide whether you need an air pump, a stronger outflow, or nothing at all.
Why the UAE makes this a real problem
Water holds less dissolved oxygen as it gets warmer. That is basic physics and it is not negotiable. At the same time, fish metabolism speeds up as water warms, so they need more oxygen. Supply falls and demand rises at exactly the same moment. That scissor is the whole story of aquarium keeping in the Gulf summer.
Roughly how much oxygen freshwater can hold at saturation:

That looks like a small drop — about 15% from 22 °C to 32 °C. But your fish's oxygen consumption over that same range can rise by 50% or more. And these numbers are the maximum. A real tank with a bioload, decaying food and a busy bacterial colony sits below saturation, sometimes well below.
A tank sitting at 26 °C with a lid, in a villa where the AC runs all day, is usually fine. A tank hitting 32 °C in a Dubai apartment where the AC gets turned off from 8am to 7pm is a different animal. Where oxygen actually enters your tank
Oxygen crosses into water at the air–water boundary. That is the top of your tank. A little transfers directly from an air bubble as it rises, but a bubble spends about a second in transit and has a tiny surface area — it contributes far less than people assume.
What an air stone genuinely does is push a column of water upward. That column reaches the surface, spreads outward, and constantly replaces the surface film with water from lower down. That turnover is the mechanism. It is why a stream of large, lazy bubbles from a cheap air stone can outperform a fine-bubble curtain that just tickles the glass.
The practical consequence: anything that agitates the surface does the same job. A hang-on-back filter's waterfall, a canister spray bar aimed slightly upward, a powerhead angled at the surface, a wavemaker — all of these oxygenate. If your surface already ripples visibly, you may not need an air pump at all. If your surface is glassy and still, you have a problem regardless of how big your filter is. Surface film matters too. If a greasy, static biofilm covers the top of your water — common in tanks that are overfed or that sit under a tight lid — gas exchange through it drops badly. Moving water breaks that film up. Lids help in other ways, but a sealed lid over a dead-still surface is the worst combination for oxygen.
When you genuinely need an air pump
Not every tank does. These are the situations where we would call it necessary rather than optional in this climate:
- Your tank runs above 29–30 °C. This is most UAE tanks for four to five months of the year. At those temperatures the safety margin is thin and extra agitation is cheap insurance.
- Heavy stocking. More fish, more respiration. If you are near or over the sensible limit in our stocking guide, aeration stops being optional.
- You are medicating. Many treatments reduce oxygen availability or stress the gills, and ich treatment specifically involves raising temperature — the exact opposite of what oxygen wants. Aerate hard during any course of medication. See the disease guide for how that plays out.
- Quarantine, hospital and fry tanks. These are usually bare, filter-light, and often warm. A sponge filter driven by an air pump is the standard answer — it aerates and filters at once, and it cannot suck in fry. Pair it with a proper quarantine routine.
- Deep or tall tanks. Surface area per litre is what counts, and a tall column has poor turnover at the bottom without help.
- Power cut readiness. A battery-backup air pump is the single highest-value emergency device you can own here. More on that below.
When you do not need one
If your tank is lightly stocked, sits at 26 °C or below, has a filter outlet breaking the surface, and your fish behave normally at dawn, adding an air pump changes very little. It will add noise and one more failure point. There is no prize for owning equipment you do not need — the same logic we apply in the honest starter equipment list.
One genuine downside worth knowing: aggressive aeration accelerates evaporation, and in a dry Gulf summer that already runs fast. Expect to top up more often, and top up with dechlorinated water, never straight from the tap — see the water conditioner guide.
How to read your fish
Fish tell you about oxygen before a test kit does. Look for these:
- Gasping at the surface — hanging at the top with mouths at the air–water line. This is the classic sign.
- Rapid gill movement while otherwise still.
- Everyone crowded at the filter outlet, where oxygen is highest.
- Bottom dwellers up high. Corydoras naturally dart up for air; loaches and plecos sitting at the surface is not normal.
- Lethargy and refusing food in an otherwise healthy tank.
Check at first light. Dissolved oxygen hits its daily minimum just before the lights come on. All night, fish, bacteria and plants have been consuming oxygen with no photosynthesis to offset it. A tank that looks fine at 9pm can be in trouble at 5am. If you keep a planted tank, this is also why your photoperiod schedule matters more than it looks.
The important confusion to avoid: gasping at the surface is also a symptom of gill damage from ammonia or nitrite. A fish with burned gills cannot extract oxygen even from perfectly oxygenated water, and adding an air stone will not fix it. Before you assume low oxygen, test the water. Choosing and installing one properly
Air pumps are rated in litres per hour of air. For most home tanks, small is fine — the common failure is buying a pump so powerful it turns a 60 L tank into a jacuzzi. Match the pump to the number of outlets you want to run and use a control valve to dial it back.
Fit a check valve. This is not optional. An air pump sitting below the water line will siphon tank water backwards down the airline the moment power fails — and power does fail here. A one-way check valve on the airline, plus a physical loop of tubing rising above the water line before it drops into the tank, gives you two independent defences. Fitting neither is how people come home to a wet floor and an empty tank.
On the outlet, you have three sensible choices. A round or cylindrical air stone is simplest. A bubble bar spreads output along a wall and looks tidier. A sponge filter uses the same air supply to drive biological filtration — the best value option for quarantine, fry and shrimp tanks, and it is what we would recommend for anyone keeping cherry shrimp.
Noise is a real consideration in a flat. A diaphragm pump buzzes, and that buzz transmits straight into whatever it stands on. Do not put it on the glass cabinet top or the same shelf as the tank. The planted tank and CO2 exception
If you inject CO2, running an air stone 24/7 works directly against you — surface agitation drives CO2 out of solution as efficiently as it drives oxygen in. The standard compromise is to run the air pump only at night, on the same timer logic as your CO2 solenoid: CO2 off, air on. That is also exactly when the plants stop producing oxygen and start consuming it, so the timing is fortunate rather than a sacrifice. Power cuts: the case that justifies buying one anyway
If you take one thing from this article: a battery-operated air pump is the cheapest insurance in the hobby. When the power goes, your filter stops. Within a few hours in a warm tank, the bacterial colony starts suffocating and the fish follow. A small battery air pump running a sponge or air stone keeps water moving and oxygen entering, and it will carry a modest tank through a long outage on a pair of D cells.
Better ones switch on automatically when mains power drops, which matters when the cut happens while you are at work. Build it into your power cut emergency plan, and if you travel in summer, into your away-from-home checklist too. It is the same reasoning behind never switching your filter off overnight to save noise.
Maintenance nobody mentions
Air stones clog. Minerals and biofilm block the pores, output drops steadily, and because it happens over weeks you do not notice until the stone is doing almost nothing. In hard UAE water this happens faster than most guides assume. Check output monthly; soak the stone in dilute vinegar or simply replace it — they cost almost nothing.
The pump's rubber diaphragm also wears out. If your pump gets noticeably louder or weaker after a year or two, a replacement diaphragm usually fixes it. Check valves fail silently too, so replace them whenever you service the line. Add all three to your regular maintenance routine.
Quick answers
Do bubbles add oxygen? Barely, directly. They work by moving water to the surface, which is where the exchange happens.
Can I run an air pump instead of a filter? No. An air pump aerates; it does not filter. A sponge filter driven by an air pump does both, and that is a legitimate setup for small tanks.
Is it bad to run an air pump 24/7? In a non-CO2 tank, no. In a CO2 injected tank, run it at night only.
My fish gasp at the surface — is it oxygen? Maybe. Test ammonia and nitrite first. Burned gills produce the same behaviour and need a different fix.
Will an air pump cool my tank? Slightly, through evaporation, but the effect is small. A fan blowing across the surface does far more.
