Aquarium Filtration Basics: Flow, Media and Cleaning Without Crashing Your Cycle

The short answer

For a normally stocked freshwater community tank, aim for a filter rated at 4–6× your tank volume per hour. Stack media in one direction — coarse, then fine, then biological. Clean mechanical media every 2–4 weeks, and never rinse biological media in untreated tap water.

A 200 L community tank therefore wants a filter rated around 800–1,200 L/h. Buy for the load you will actually have in six months, not the one you have on day one.

Rated flow is not real flow

Manufacturers measure flow with an empty chamber and no hoses. In a real installation, expect the actual number to land 30–50% below the rating once you add media, hoses, elbows and a metre of vertical lift. That is not a defect — it is head loss, and it is normal.

Three consequences worth planning for:

  • Buy above your target, not at it. A filter rated at exactly 4× will deliver roughly 2–3× in practice.
  • Flow decays as media clogs. The filter you sized correctly in January is undersized by March if it has not been cleaned.
  • Measure the tank, not the box. Dead corners, debris settling on the substrate and a still surface are all better evidence than a printed number.

Three jobs, one water path

Filtration is usually split into mechanical, biological and chemical. The mistake is to treat those as three products you buy. They are three stages the water passes through, in a fixed order.

Water must hit coarse media first. If it hits biological media first, that media clogs with debris, oxygen stops reaching the bacteria, and your expensive bio media becomes an expensive sponge.

How much biological media do you actually need?

Bacteria colonise surface area, so surface area is the number that matters — not volume. Rough orders of magnitude:

  • Bio balls: on the order of tens of m² per litre. Mostly used in wet/dry trickle systems where air contact matters more than density.
  • Ceramic rings: a few hundred m² per litre.
  • Sintered / porous glass media: manufacturers claim far higher figures, but much of that surface is in pores too small for bacteria to occupy meaningfully. Treat headline numbers with scepticism.

In practice, a filter that is roughly one third to one half biological media by volume, kept clean and well oxygenated, is enough for a normally stocked tank. More media in a clogged, oxygen-starved chamber does nothing.

The cleaning rule that saves cycles

Over 99% of your biological filter lives on surfaces — filter media, substrate, wood and glass — not in the water. This single fact dictates the whole maintenance routine.

  • Rinse biological media in a bucket of removed tank water. Chlorine and chloramine in tap water kill nitrifying bacteria on contact.
  • Squeeze, do not scrub. The goal is to dislodge sludge, not to make the media look new. Grey and ugly is what a working sponge looks like.
  • Never replace all biological media at once. If media must be replaced, swap no more than a third at a time and leave 4–6 weeks between swaps.
  • Do not clean the filter and change a lot of water on the same day in a young tank. Spread the disturbance out.
  • Do not leave the filter switched off for more than a few hours. Nitrifying bacteria are aerobic. With no flow, the oxygen in the media is consumed and die-off begins within hours. If the power is out, pull the media and keep it in aerated tank water rather than letting it sit stagnant.

If a filter has been neglected for months, clean it in stages over several weeks. A single deep clean can release trapped waste and strip bacterial capacity at the same time — which is how a "maintenance day" turns into an ammonia spike.

Choosing a filter type

One design rule beats all of the above: if the filter is hard to reach, it will not be maintained. Service space belongs in the cabinet plan before the cabinet is built.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my aquarium filter?

Rinse mechanical media every 2–4 weeks, or whenever flow visibly drops. Biological media needs only an occasional gentle rinse in removed tank water — and only when it is genuinely clogged.

Can I rinse filter media under the tap?

Not biological media. Chlorine and chloramine kill nitrifying bacteria on contact. Coarse sponges and disposable floss can be rinsed under the tap only if you accept that any bacteria on them will die.

How many times per hour should my filter turn over the tank?

4–6× per hour for a standard community tank, 8–10× for heavily stocked or messy fish, 2–3× for shrimp and low-flow planted tanks. Buy above your target, because real-world flow runs 30–50% below the printed rating.

Do I need activated carbon running all the time?

No. Carbon is a tool, not a permanent stage. It exhausts in roughly four weeks and it will strip medications out of the water. Use it to clear tannins, odours or leftover medication, then remove it.

Is a sponge filter enough on its own?

For shrimp, fry, quarantine and lightly stocked nano tanks, yes. Sponge filters provide excellent biological capacity and are the safest option around small livestock. They simply do not offer a chemical stage or strong mechanical polishing.

My filter stopped during a power cut. Is the cycle dead?

Not immediately. Nitrifying bacteria are aerobic and begin dying once the oxygen in stagnant media is used up — damage becomes significant after several hours. If the outage is long, remove the media and keep it in aerated tank water.
