The short answer
Three things make Dubai different from most aquarium advice you will read online: ambient heat (which lowers dissolved oxygen), rapid evaporation (which concentrates minerals and nitrate), and desalinated tap water (which is often low in carbonate hardness). Everything below follows from those three.
Heat is the main variable
Warm water holds less oxygen. That is not a small effect. Freshwater at 25 °C holds roughly 8.2 mg/L of dissolved oxygen at saturation; at 30 °C it holds about 7.5 mg/L. At the same time, fish metabolism rises with temperature — so the tank needs more oxygen exactly when the water can hold less.
This is why the classic summer failure is not "the fish overheated." It is "the fish suffocated in warm water," and it looks like this: fish hanging near the surface, gills working fast, appetite dropping, and one death overnight with no other symptom.
Cooling a tank without a chiller

Do not float bags of ice in the tank. A 3 °C swing over an hour is more dangerous to most fish than a stable 30 °C. Stability beats the ideal number.
The air-conditioning trap
A room that is cooled all day and then left to climb overnight, or cooled hard while you are home and switched off while you travel, produces a daily temperature swing in the tank. Fish tolerate a stable warm tank far better than a tank that moves 4 °C every day. If you leave home for a week, the question is not "what temperature will the room be" — it is "how much will it move."

Top-off is not a water change
Evaporation removes water and leaves everything dissolved in it behind. Topping off restores the volume, but it exports nothing. Nitrate, phosphate, dissolved organics and minerals all keep climbing.
In a Dubai summer, an open-top tank can lose a noticeable fraction of its volume in a week. That means the two jobs must stay separate:
- Top off with dechlorinated freshwater whenever the waterline drops. Mark the normal waterline discreetly on the glass so you are not guessing.
- Water change on a fixed schedule regardless of how much you topped off. A tank can look completely full and still be overdue.
If you top off with water that contains minerals, those minerals accumulate every single time. Over months, hardness and TDS drift upward and nobody can explain why.
Dubai tap water: test before you trust
Most of the water supplied in the UAE is desalinated and then remineralised. That has one practical consequence for aquarists: carbonate hardness (KH) is often lower than the aquarium literature assumes, and KH is what stops your pH from crashing.
Nitrification consumes alkalinity continuously. If your KH sits below roughly 3 dKH, pH becomes unstable, and a pH crash can stall your biological filter overnight.
- Test KH and GH from your own tap before you plan anything. Numbers vary by emirate, by building, and by whether the building has its own treatment.
- Chlorine or chloramine is present. Always dechlorinate — both for the fish and for the bacteria in your filter.
- Water stored in a rooftop tank in July can arrive genuinely hot. Check the temperature of your top-off water before it goes in.
The weekly rhythm
Good maintenance is boring maintenance. It should be repeatable when you are tired, not just when you are enthusiastic.

Leaving the country
Travel is where most Dubai tanks fail. Before you go:
- Do a water change the day before you leave, not the day you get back.
- Set the air-conditioning to a stable temperature rather than switching it off.
- Pre-portion food. An unsupervised helper who "just adds a bit more" is a more common cause of death than starvation — healthy adult fish tolerate a week without food far better than they tolerate an ammonia spike.
- Write down: what to feed, how much, what to top off with, what not to touch, and who to call.

Frequently asked questions
What temperature is too hot for a tropical aquarium in Dubai?
Most tropical community fish are comfortable at 24–27 °C. Above 30 °C, dissolved oxygen falls and metabolic demand rises at the same time. A stable 29 °C with strong surface agitation is usually safer than an unstable 27 °C.
Do I need a chiller in the UAE?
Not always. Surface agitation, cabinet ventilation, a cooling fan and moving the light period overnight are often enough for a community tank. A chiller becomes hard to avoid for cold-water species, axolotls, and large systems in an unairconditioned space.
