A summer travel plan must cover the whole aquarium, not just its food. Someone needs to notice a failed filter, rising temperature, a leak or unusual fish behaviour and be able to act. A camera or automatic feeder cannot do all of those jobs.
Arrange a responsible local helper
Book the care before booking assumptions about how long fish can be left alone. The RSPCA recommends daily checks of fish and equipment during holidays. Walk your helper through the aquarium while you are still home, and arrange a backup person who can gain access.
A week away and a month away need different maintenance arrangements, but neither has a universal safe no-care period. Young, ill or recently introduced animals, specialist feeders and newly established tanks need particular planning.
Test the room conditions you will actually leave behind
Keep the aquarium out of direct sun and check its temperature under the planned air-conditioning schedule before departure. Use the range required by your livestock; a convenient thermostat setting for an empty home is not automatically safe for the tank.
Leave a readable thermometer and written limits for contacting you. Do not ask an inexperienced helper to improvise with ice or change heater settings without a plan. Review summer aquarium cooling before travelling.
Make the routine easy to repeat
- List the normal filter flow and water level, ideally with a reference photo.
- Label measured food portions and the agreed feeding schedule.
- Identify any scheduled water changes and who is qualified to carry them out.
- Label prepared top-up water and the correct fill mark if top-ups are part of your routine.
- Leave the equipment manuals and emergency contacts where the helper can find them.
Top-ups replace evaporation, not routine water changes. Preparation depends on the aquarium's water chemistry; do not tell a helper to add arbitrary tap water, salt or minerals. Keep feeding and maintenance predictable
Do not compensate for your absence with extra food. Choose a feeding plan for the actual species and life stages, and trial it before departure. If using a feeder, test the actual food, portions and schedule while you can observe it. Our holiday feeding guide covers that part separately.
Complete necessary routine maintenance early enough to observe the aquarium afterwards. Avoid a major redesign, new livestock or wholesale media replacement immediately before leaving. Record recent water-test results so the helper has a useful baseline.
Leave an escalation plan
Write down what to do if the filter stops, temperature leaves the normal range, fish become distressed or a leak appears. A tested power-cut kit belongs beside those instructions. Remote monitoring can assist, but the plan still needs a person who can reach the aquarium.
