Choosing between a sump and a canister filter is easier if you stop asking which one is “better.” They solve the same basic job in different ways: move aquarium water through mechanical and biological filtration, then return it to the display tank.

The better choice is the one that fits the aquarium you are actually building, the space around it and the maintenance routine you will genuinely keep. A well-maintained canister filter can support a successful aquarium. A sump can make a larger or more equipment-heavy system easier to organise and expand. Neither makes water quality automatic.

When a sump earns its extra complexity
