A filter that suddenly sounds different is worth checking, but it is not always an emergency. A gentle operating hum is normal for many filters. Grinding, repeated rattling, splashing or a new clicking sound can mean trapped air, a low water level, loose media or a part that needs cleaning or replacing.
The safe rule is simple: do not keep dismantling a running filter while guessing. First identify the sound, confirm that water is still moving, and make one careful check at a time. A noisy filter and a failed filter are not the same thing, but a filter with no flow, a leak, a burning smell or fish in distress needs prompt attention.
Start with the filter's job, not just the noise
A filter moves water, provides a home for beneficial bacteria and usually helps create surface movement. Before chasing a sound, look at the aquarium:
- Is there a normal, steady return flow?
- Are fish behaving normally rather than gathering at the surface?
- Is the water level high enough for the filter design?
- Is there any water outside the aquarium, around the plug or below the cabinet?
If the flow has stopped, the filter is overheating, you see a leak, or there is an electrical smell, switch it off at the wall without putting hands into the water and contact the supplier or a qualified technician. Do not take electrical risks for the sake of a quick fix.

1. Check the water level and outlet first
For hang-on and internal filters, a lower water level can make the return noisier because water falls farther before it reaches the aquarium. Evaporation is common in air-conditioned homes, so a new splash may simply be a prompt to check the level against the filter's instructions.
Top up only with water prepared for the aquarium; a top-up is not a substitute for a scheduled water change. If the level is correct but the outlet is suddenly loud, make sure nothing has shifted and that the returning water is not striking a lid, glass brace or loose decoration.
2. Look for trapped air before changing parts
Air in the filter body or intake can create a rattling or uneven sound, especially after a water change, cleaning session or a brief power interruption. Follow the manufacturer’s priming instructions for your exact model. Do not shake, tip or run a filter dry unless the instructions specifically say it is safe.
Keep an eye on the return flow while the filter settles. If air noise returns repeatedly, inspect the intake path and fittings rather than repeatedly switching the unit on and off.
3. Clean only the part that needs cleaning
A blocked intake, dirty impeller well or loose fragment of media can make a filter noisier. Clean the relevant removable part according to the maker’s instructions. For biological media, avoid replacing or aggressively washing everything at once: the filter is also part of the aquarium’s biological stability.
Use water removed from the aquarium when gently rinsing biological media, rather than untreated tap water. If you are unsure which part is mechanical media and which part supports bacteria, pause and ask before replacing it. A quieter filter is not an improvement if the aquarium loses too much biological filtration.
4. Inspect the impeller carefully
The impeller is a small moving part, but it can be responsible for a surprising amount of noise. With the filter safely unplugged and only after checking the model guidance, inspect for:
- grit, plant fragments or snails in the impeller area;
- a damaged or worn impeller, shaft or rubber end cap;
- parts that are not seated in the correct position;
- an intake that is restricted by debris or placed too close to the substrate.
Do not fit a “universal” replacement part because it looks similar. Use the correct part for the filter model, or have the supplier confirm compatibility. If a cleaned and correctly reassembled filter still grinds, replacement may be safer than forcing it to continue.
5. Separate a flow problem from an oxygen problem
Surface movement can support gas exchange, but a louder filter does not automatically mean better oxygenation. If fish are gasping, breathing rapidly or crowding the surface, treat that as an aquarium-health check rather than a noise complaint. Stop troubleshooting and seek help promptly if you notice a leak, damaged cable, burning smell, repeated loss of flow, overheating, or fish showing distress. Keep the aquarium water safe and stable while you arrange the next step. Do not leave a failing unit running unattended, and do not add fish while the system is unstable.
