The best beginner fish are the ones whose adult needs fit your aquarium, your measured water conditions and the care you can provide. Living in Dubai does not, by itself, tell you which fish will thrive: test the water you actually use and measure the tank temperature through the day.
Start with a fish plan, not a shopping list
Before choosing a species, write down the aquarium's swimming length and footprint in mm, its usable water volume in litres, the filter and the expected temperature range. Then check pH, general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH). Do not assume that every UAE supply is hard, soft or identical to water in the shop.

A shortlist to research
These are starting points, not a promise that they can all share one tank. Confirm the exact species, adult size and care requirements before buying.

For species-level checks, use OATA's guppy and molly guidance, platy guidance and betta guidance. A common name is not enough to approve an entire community.
Fish that need a more specialised plan
Do not treat African cichlids as an automatic beginner choice because your tap water happens to be alkaline. Their adult size, territorial behaviour and compatibility vary. A deliberately crowded cichlid setup is not a general stocking method for a new keeper.
Large plecos, arowanas and other fish sold while young need an adult-size plan from the start. Goldfish also need appropriate space, filtration and temperatures; they are not a default companion for tropical fish. Avoid buying any animal primarily as a cleaner.
Neocaridina shrimp can be an alternative to a fish community, but they still need a mature, suitable environment. Neither their mineral requirements nor medication compatibility can be assumed from the word “shrimp.”
Manage the room you have
Check temperature in the actual aquarium, including when air-conditioning changes or the room is unoccupied. Choose heating or cooling around the selected species; there is no single setting for all tropical fish.
Warm water holds less oxygen, so filtration, surface movement and stocking deserve attention. But gasping is not proof of one cause: temperature, water quality, oxygen, excess injected CO2 and health problems all need consideration. If fish are distressed, improve aeration safely, test promptly and seek qualified advice rather than assuming an air stone cures everything.
Build the community in stages
- Shortlist the species and verify adult requirements together.
- Use the fish tank size guide to plan space, not a fixed number of fish per litre.
- Check the equipment checklist, set up the tank and verify its cycle.
- Add an appropriate first group, then monitor water and behaviour before further additions.
- Keep a repeatable maintenance routine and a plan for holidays and young fish.
