The 30-second verdict
Metabolic bone disease — soft bones, tremors, a jaw that will not close, a shell that pyramids, a slow decline — is the most common serious illness in captive reptiles. It is also almost entirely preventable, and it is not caused by "not enough calcium."
It is caused by a chain breaking, and the chain has four links:
- UVB → the animal synthesises vitamin D3
- D3 → the animal can absorb calcium
- Calcium → present in the food, at the right ratio to phosphorus
- The insect actually contains something → because you fed the insect first
Break any one link and the whole chain fails. You can dust with calcium every single day and still lose an animal to MBD, because calcium with no D3 to absorb it is calcium that passes straight through.
This is why "I give it calcium powder" is not an answer to "how do you prevent MBD." It is one link of four.
The link everyone skips: gut-loading

Here is the sentence that changes how people think about this:
Your reptile does not eat insects. It eats what the insects ate.
A cricket that has been sitting in a shop container for a week, unfed, is a hollow shell of chitin with almost no nutritional content. Dusting it with calcium powder puts a thin coating on the outside — much of which falls off before the animal swallows it. You have delivered a crunchy nothing.
Gut-loading means feeding the feeder insects properly for 24–48 hours before they go to your reptile. The insect becomes a container of nutrition rather than an empty exoskeleton. This is not a refinement for advanced keepers. It is most of the nutrition.
What to gut-load with: leafy greens (collard, mustard, dandelion), carrot, squash, sweet potato, and a proper commercial gut-load if you can get one. Not iceberg lettuce, which is nutritional water.
The practical reality here: live feeder insects can be inconsistent to source in the UAE, and the ones you buy have often been in transit or in a shop container for a while, unfed. Which means gut-loading is more important here than in places where the supply chain is short, not less. Budget 48 hours between buying insects and using them, and keep a container of greens going for them. Many keepers here end up culturing their own dubia roaches for exactly this reason — it solves the supply problem and the gut-load problem in one move.
Calcium and phosphorus: the ratio nobody mentions
Calcium does not work in isolation. What matters is the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio — you are aiming for roughly 2:1 in favour of calcium.
The problem: most feeder insects are backwards. Crickets and mealworms are phosphorus-heavy, sometimes 1:9 against you. Phosphorus binds calcium and makes it unavailable, so a diet of plain crickets is not calcium-neutral — it is actively calcium-negative.
That is what the dusting is correcting for. And it is why the same rule shows up in the plant world too:
Spinach and kale are not good staples for herbivorous reptiles, despite looking like the healthiest thing in the fridge. They contain oxalates that bind calcium in the gut. They are fine occasionally; they are a bad daily green.
Better greens: collard, mustard and turnip greens, dandelion, endive, butternut squash, bell pepper.
Dusting: how, and how much
Put the insects in a bag or tub with a small amount of powder and shake gently. You want a light coating, not a snowball.
There are two different powders and they are not interchangeable:

Do not stack them and do not double up. Oversupplementing D3 and vitamin A is itself harmful — they are fat-soluble, they accumulate, and hypervitaminosis is a real diagnosis. More is not safer. If your calcium-with-D3 and your multivitamin both contain D3, you are dosing it twice without realising.
Read the labels and follow the product's schedule rather than a schedule you read on a forum for a different product. This is one of the few places in reptile keeping where the manufacturer genuinely knows something you do not.
The UVB link — which is a feeding problem in disguise
Everything above is worthless without UVB, because without it the animal cannot make D3, and without D3 the calcium does not get absorbed.
Two failures that are specific to this country:
1. "We live in the desert — I'll just take it outside." Glass and plastic block UVB, so a reptile by a window gets nothing. And in a Dubai summer, an animal in a container outdoors can die in minutes. There is no safe version of this in July. Full argument: Keeping Desert Reptiles in the UAE.
2. The expired tube that still lights up. UVB output decays long before the lamp stops emitting visible light — typically replace every 6–12 months depending on the model. The lamp looks perfectly bright. The animal is getting nothing. MBD then develops silently over months while you believe you are covered.
Write the install date on the tube in marker. It is the cheapest husbandry intervention there is.
And one more link: a reptile that is too cold cannot digest. Digestion is temperature-driven. If the basking surface is not hitting the target, food sits in the gut, ferments, and the animal goes off its food — and no amount of calcium fixes that. The single most common cause of "my reptile stopped eating" is a basking spot that is too cool. Check the temperature before you check anything else: the numbers.
What to feed what

The universal size rule: nothing wider than the space between the animal's eyes. Bigger than that risks impaction or, in lizards, hind-leg paralysis.
Never: wild-caught insects (pesticide exposure in a UAE garden or building is not theoretical), fireflies (lethal to reptiles), avocado (toxic), dog or cat food, or feeder insects from an unknown source.
Reading the animal

Weigh your animal weekly and write it down. A kitchen scale and a notebook. It is the single most useful diagnostic you own — it tells brumation from illness, it catches decline weeks before it is visible, and it costs nothing.
Common questions
I dust with calcium at every feeding. Am I covered? No. Dusting is one link of four. Without working UVB the calcium is not absorbed; without gut-loading the insect had nothing in it to begin with; and if the basking spot is too cool, nothing is being digested at all.
Can I use human calcium tablets? Use a reptile-specific product. The formulation, the D3 content and the phosphorus balance are all designed for this, and getting the D3 wrong is harmful in both directions.
How long can a reptile go without food? Longer than you think, and much longer than it can go with the wrong husbandry. A healthy adult skipping meals is not an emergency. An adult that is thin and losing weight is.
My gecko licks calcium out of a dish. Is that too much? Leopard geckos self-regulate with a dish of plain calcium and it is standard practice. That does not extend to D3 or vitamins — those you control.
What is the one thing to fix today? Feed your feeder insects. If you buy crickets tonight and use them tomorrow, put greens in the container overnight. It costs nothing and it is probably the largest single improvement available to most keepers here.
