A clown loach can be small when you buy it and still become a demanding long-term aquarium resident. Start with the adult group you can house, then choose fish that fit that plan. Buying one as a temporary snail solution leaves the important housing decision unanswered.
Plan for a group that will grow
Clown loaches (Chromobotia macracanthus) are social fish. OATA recommends at least five and notes that adults can exceed 300 mm. Its guidance calls for an aquarium longer than six feet—approximately 1,830 mm—for fully grown clown loaches. This is an adult-planning reference, not a guarantee that any aquarium of that length suits every group. Width, layout and the other fish also need assessment. Source: OATA loach guidance.
Measure the usable tank interior before comparing aquariums. If the intended adult setup is not available, postpone adding the group. A recorded “Small” or “Giant” stock label does not change the species' needs.
Build a settled aquarium with shelter
Use an established filtered aquarium with sand or fine gravel, suitable hiding places and open swimming space. Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water. Check flow and shelter together: the fish should have resting areas as well as circulation. Source: Aqueon loach housing guidance.
For a species-specific starting reference, Aquarium Industries gives 25–28°C and pH 6.4–7.4 for clown loaches. Ask about the actual stock's holding conditions and prepare a stable target; these ranges are not instructions to repeatedly adjust the water between their endpoints. Feed the fish deliberately
Offer suitable sinking foods and a varied diet, and watch that each fish reaches food. Snails or leftovers from other fish are not a complete feeding plan. Remove uneaten food and use water tests to guide maintenance. OATA describes loaches as omnivores and recommends sinking pellets or granules with suitable supplementary foods. Review companions and the move home
Check the whole aquarium rather than relying on a “community fish” label. Aquarium Industries advises against aggressive companions. Before collection, discuss transport and acclimation for the actual fish and your measured water conditions. Source: Aquarium Industries compatibility guidance.
