Choose a left or right aquarium overflow by checking the room, the cabinet plumbing and how you will reach it for maintenance—not by assuming one side filters better. Neither position is automatically the right choice for every fish tank. Before ordering, confirm which viewing direction the supplier uses to describe “left” and “right”, then compare the exact model with your planned layout.
For a tank beside a wall, sofa or fitted cabinet, that small detail can affect whether the overflow is easy to service or awkward to reach. Here is a practical way to decide before the aquarium arrives.
What does “left overflow” or “right overflow” mean?
The description identifies the location of the overflow assembly. In a typical sump-fed aquarium, water passes into the overflow and drains to filtration below; a return pump sends water back to the display. The overflow is not the same thing as the return outlet, and its side does not tell you the complete plumbing layout. Ask for a front-view photograph or drawing labelled with the viewing side. A photograph taken from behind—or a mirrored promotional image—can make a left/right description easy to misread. The model number and an annotated layout are more useful than a colour photo alone.

Start with access, then consider the view
Mark the intended front of the aquarium on a simple room sketch. Add nearby walls, furniture, cabinet doors and the route you would use to reach the equipment. Then compare the available configurations:

Do not choose a fixed clearance from a generic article. The space needed depends on the exact tank, cabinet and equipment. Use the instructions for the model you are buying, not another range’s measurements.
Check what happens inside the cabinet
An overflow position is only one part of the route from display tank to filter. Ask where the drain enters the sump, where the return pump sits, and whether doors and removable equipment have enough working room.
A short, accessible connection can be easier to plan than pipework crossing the cabinet. But do not assume that a left-side overflow always requires a left-hand sump: the manufacturer’s intended arrangement is what matters. Ask the supplier to show how routine servicing works: removing a filter pad or media basket, accessing a valve, lifting a pump out and cleaning the overflow intake. “It fits inside” is not the same as “it can be removed for cleaning”.
Read the whole specification, not just the overflow side
Two listings with the same tank length may still differ in height, cabinet finish and equipment. For example, YoloLife’s product specifications checked on 25 September 2026 list:
- SHAPEWATER RO-A120-A604115: a left-side overflow, tank dimensions of 1200 × 600 × 680 mm, and a cabinet height of 1000 mm.
- SHAPEWATER RO-P120-A604126: a right-side overflow, tank dimensions of 1200 × 600 × 780 mm, and a cabinet height of 900 mm.
These are two different configurations, not an otherwise identical left-versus-right pair. They illustrate why matching tank length alone is not enough. They are examples from the catalogue, not the limit of YoloLife’s fish-tank range.

Three questions worth settling before you order
Will one side give better flow or quieter operation?
Left or right alone is not a performance rating. Ask about the complete overflow, drain and return arrangement and the manufacturer’s operating guidance. Do not choose a side based on an unsupported claim that it automatically makes the aquarium cleaner or quieter.
Can the overflow be moved later?
Do not assume so. Treat its position as fixed unless the manufacturer confirms otherwise for that exact tank. Do not cut out an overflow or drill the glass as a layout workaround without manufacturer-approved guidance and suitably qualified help.
Can I turn the tank around instead?
Do not plan on this without checking the tank and cabinet together. Back panels, plumbing exits, door access and viewing finishes may make the reversed layout unsuitable. Choose the intended orientation before installation.
