Your First Planted Tank in the UAE: Low-Tech, No CO2, No Algae Farm

The 30-second verdict

Most people's first planted tank fails the same way: strong light, three small plants, no CO2 — and within a month it is an algae farm. They conclude plants are hard and buy plastic ones.

The plants were not the problem. The balance was. And the fix is the opposite of what the equipment shelf suggests:

  • Plant heavily on day one — this is the single most important thing on this page. A tank stuffed with plants has no spare resources for algae. A sparse tank with a strong light is an algae farm with decorations.
  • Less light, not more. 6–7 hours a day, moderate intensity. More light without more carbon just feeds algae.
  • Choose plants that do not need CO2. There is a whole category of them and they are the best-looking easy plants in the hobby.
  • Skip CO2 entirely for your first tank. It is not a beginner's tool; it is what you add when the low-tech version is already thriving and you want faster growth.

And a local bonus: hard, alkaline Dubai tap water is often described as a problem for planted tanks. For a low-tech tank it is mostly an advantage — more on that below.

The plants that actually work

These are all low-light, no-CO2, hard-water tolerant, and slow enough that they do not need constant trimming. Buy several of each, not one of each.

Cryptocoryne (wendtii, parva) Substrate, mid-ground Excellent in hard water. Expect "crypt melt" — leaves dissolve after planting. Do not pull it out. It regrows from the roots in a few weeks, adapted to your water.
Java moss Anywhere Grows on anything, shelters shrimp and fry, and soaks up nutrients that would otherwise feed algae.
Vallisneria Background Loves hard water. Fast-growing grass that spreads by runners — fast growth is what outcompetes algae.
Amazon sword Background centrepiece Large and dramatic. Root feeder — give it a root tab.
Hornwort / Elodea Floating or background Grows extremely fast, which is the point: in a new tank, fast growers are your algae insurance. Throw half of it away every few weeks.

Avoid for a first tank: carpeting plants (dwarf hairgrass, HC "Cuba", Monte Carlo) — they genuinely need CO2 and strong light, and they are what most failed first attempts were trying to grow. Also avoid anything sold as "red" — red colouration is driven by high light and CO2.

Why hard water is fine — and where it is not

You will read that planted tanks want soft, slightly acidic water. That advice comes from the high-tech aquascaping world, where soft water is part of a system built around CO2 injection and demanding species.

For low-tech planting, hard alkaline water is largely an asset:

  • Vallisneria, anubias, java fern, crypts and swords all do well in it — some prefer it.
  • Hard water is buffered, so the pH does not swing. Stability is worth more to a beginner than any ideal number.
  • It carries calcium and magnesium, which plants use.

The genuine limitation: a few species (and most carpets) want soft acidic water and will sulk. The answer is to not buy those, not to fight your water. Same principle as the fish: work with the water you have.

Substrate, light and fertiliser

Substrate. For this plant list, plain inert sand or fine gravel is fine — anubias, java fern and moss are not even in the substrate, and crypts and swords feed mainly through their roots, which a root tab handles. Aquasoil is excellent but it is an investment for later, and it leaches ammonia in the first weeks, which is its own complication for a first tank.

Light. A moderate LED, 6–7 hours a day, on a timer. That is it. Two specifics for here:

  • No direct sunlight, ever. A window that hits the tank for an hour will overwhelm everything you do. In this country the sun is decisive: tank placement.
  • Run the light at night if the room is hot — a lamp sitting on a closed lid adds real heat in summer.

Fertiliser. A modest liquid all-in-one twice a week, plus root tabs for crypts and swords. Under-dose rather than over-dose — excess nutrients in a low-light tank go to algae, not plants. And if you keep shrimp, check the label for copper first: why copper matters.

The first month

What is normal, so you do not panic and pull everything out:

  1. Week 1–2: crypt melt. Your crypts dissolve. This is normal — they are shedding leaves grown in a nursery and regrowing for your water. Leave them alone.
  2. Week 2–4: diatoms. A brown dusty film over the glass and plants. Every new tank gets this. It goes away on its own as the tank matures. Wipe the glass, do nothing else: the algae guide.
  3. Week 3–6: new growth. The first genuinely new leaf is the signal that the plant has adapted. From here it accelerates.
  4. Throughout: keep cycling. Plants do not replace the nitrogen cycle. The tank still needs to cycle before fish: the day-by-day guide.

The discipline for month one: do not increase the light, do not add more fertiliser, do not buy an algaecide. Almost every first-tank disaster is caused by intervening at week three.

The summer complication, stated honestly

There is one real conflict between planted tanks and this climate, and it is worth knowing before you start.

In a UAE summer you need strong surface agitation for oxygen — warm water holds less, and that is what kills fish here. But surface agitation drives off CO2, including the small amount that occurs naturally, which slows plant growth and can invite black beard algae.

Resolve it in the fish's favour, always. Slower plants are cosmetic; low oxygen is fatal. This is one more reason a low-tech tank suits this country: you are not trying to protect an expensive injected CO2 level, so you can aerate freely. (The oxygen argument in full.)

Fish and cleanup for a planted tank

Plant-safe and well suited to hard water:

  • Harlequin rasboras, platies, corydoras — the standard community set: what survives here.
  • Neocaridina shrimp — excellent in a planted tank, and your hard water is what they need: the shrimp guide.
  • Nerite snails — the best glass cleaners available, and they do not eat healthy plants.

Avoid: goldfish and most cichlids — they eat or uproot plants as a matter of routine. A mbuna tank is a rock tank by design, not a planted one.

Common questions

Do I really not need CO2? Not for these plants. CO2 makes plants grow faster and allows demanding species — it is an upgrade, not a requirement. Adding it to a beginner tank usually adds an algae problem, because it also requires more light, more fertiliser and tighter consistency.

My anubias is rotting where I planted it. The rhizome (the thick horizontal stem) is buried. Lift it out, tie or glue it to wood or rock with only the roots touching anything. Same for java fern.

How many plants is "heavily planted"? More than looks reasonable when you are buying them. Aim to cover most of the substrate and background from day one — a tank that looks slightly overplanted at week one looks right at week eight, and it will never have an algae bloom.

Can I use tap water for a planted tank? Yes, dechlorinated, as normal. And remember the evaporation rule here: top up with RO or distilled, change with tap — otherwise the tank concentrates over a summer.
