Is Dubai Tap Water Safe for Fish? What's Actually In It, and What To Do About It

The 30-second verdict

Yes, you can keep fish on UAE tap water. Almost everyone here does, including us. You need one thing: a dechlorinator, used every single time, with no exceptions.

But "is it safe" is the wrong question, and it is the reason so many beginners here end up confused. Tap water is not a pass/fail test. It is a type of water, and the useful question is: what type is it, and which fish does that suit?

The short answer for the UAE:

  • It starts as seawater. Most of what comes out of your tap is desalinated, then remineralised before distribution. It is engineered water, not river water.
  • The result is typically hard and alkaline — commonly somewhere around pH 7.5–8.2, though it varies by emirate, by building, and by season.
  • In July, the cold tap is not cold. This is a real and underrated hazard, and we will come back to it.

And the one rule that follows from all of it: do not try to change your water. Choose fish that already want it.

What UAE tap water actually is

Fishkeeping advice written in Europe or North America assumes tap water that came from a river, a reservoir or a borehole — water with a mineral profile inherited from the rock it flowed over. That is not what you have.

Water here is overwhelmingly desalinated seawater. Desalination strips out essentially everything, producing water that is far too pure to drink or to distribute — it would corrode the pipes. So it is remineralised: minerals and alkalinity are deliberately added back before it reaches the network, and in some areas it is blended with groundwater.

Two consequences matter for your tank:

  1. The mineral content is a deliberate recipe, not an accident of geology. That makes it fairly consistent — which is good news, because stability is what fish actually care about.
  2. It lands hard and alkaline. Good news for livebearers, African cichlids and Neocaridina shrimp. Bad news for discus and wild-caught soft-water fish.

Your emirate's utility publishes water quality data, and it is worth a look. But do not build your tank on a published average — build it on your own tap, for reasons that become obvious in a moment.

The three things that actually matter

1. Chlorine — and the myth that will cost you a tank

Tap water is disinfected. That is the entire point of it, and it is why it is safe for you. It is also why it is lethal to the bacteria colony in your filter — the colony you spent six weeks growing, which is the only thing standing between your fish and their own ammonia.

So: dechlorinate every drop that goes into the tank. Every time. Including "just a small top-up."

Now the myth. You will read, everywhere, that you can simply leave a bucket of tap water out overnight and the chlorine will evaporate away.

That is true of free chlorine. It is not true of chloramine — chlorine bonded to ammonia, which many utilities use precisely because it is more stable and does not gas off. If your supply is chloraminated and you "treat" it by letting it stand, you have done nothing at all, and you will pour it into your tank with total confidence.

Because you cannot reliably know which you have from one week to the next, the answer is simple: use a conditioner that explicitly states it neutralises both chlorine and chloramine, and stop relying on a bucket and a night. A bottle costs less than a single fish and lasts months.

2. Hardness and pH — and the temptation to fight them

Your water is hard and alkaline. Every instinct will tell you to correct it. Resist.

The "pH Down" bottle on the shop shelf works — for about three days. Then the water's natural buffering pulls the pH back up, you dose again, and your fish live on a chemical rollercoaster. A pH that swings is far more dangerous than a pH that is stable at the "wrong" number. Fish adapt remarkably well to steady water they did not evolve in. They do not adapt to water that changes every week.

So the strategy is the opposite of what it feels like it should be: accept your water and stock to it. Hard alkaline water is not a defect — it is what African rift-lake cichlids come from (their lakes sit around pH 7.8–8.6), it is what livebearers evolved in, and it is what Neocaridina shrimp need to build their shells. 3. The temperature at your tap in July

This one is specific to living here, and almost nothing written abroad will warn you about it.

Many UAE buildings store water in rooftop or exposed tanks. In July, those tanks bake. The practical result is a "cold" tap that runs at 35 °C or well beyond in the afternoon — sometimes hotter than the hot tap in winter.

If you do a water change with it without checking, you have just poured a 38 °C shock into a 28 °C tank. Temperature shock kills faster than almost anything else on this page.

What to do: put a thermometer in the bucket, not just in the tank. Run the tap for a while before filling. Do changes in the early morning, when the building's tank is at its coolest. And never fix a temperature mismatch by adding hot tap water — water from the hot line has been sitting against a heating element and plumbing, and can carry dissolved metals like copper that are quietly lethal to shrimp and hard on fish. Mix with kettle-boiled water in a bucket if you must, never straight from the hot tap.

Test your own tap. It takes ten minutes.

Published city averages are a starting point, not an answer. Your actual water depends on your emirate, your building's storage tanks, how long it sat in them, whether the building filters, and how old the pipes are. Two towers on the same street can differ.

So test it yourself, once, properly:

  1. Buy a liquid test kit, not paper strips. Strips drift with age and humidity, and humidity is not in short supply here.
  2. Fill a glass from the tap and test it immediately. Note the pH and the general hardness (GH).
  3. Let the same glass stand for 24 hours, then test again.

You will very likely find the pH is higher after standing. That is not an error. Tap water is often supersaturated with dissolved CO2, which suppresses the pH reading; once it off-gasses, the true pH shows up. The 24-hour number is the one your tank will actually live at — and a lot of people have panicked at a mismatch between their tap reading and their tank reading for exactly this reason.

Write the numbers down and keep them. When something goes wrong in eight months, that single sheet of paper is the difference between diagnosing it and guessing.

Top-ups and water changes are not the same thing

This is the distinction that quietly ruins UAE tanks over a summer, and it follows directly from the fact that our water is mineral-rich.

  • Evaporation removes water and leaves the minerals behind. The tank gets steadily harder and more concentrated — and in this climate, a lot evaporates.
  • A water change removes water and the minerals dissolved in it, and replaces both.

So they need different water:

Use Why
Topping up evaporation RO or distilled water You are replacing water that left its minerals behind. Adding hard tap water here stacks hardness on hardness, week after week.
Water change Dechlorinated tap water, temperature-matched You removed minerals along with the water, so you are replacing like with like — and resetting the tank toward your baseline.

Get these two backwards for a whole summer and you can drift a long way out of range without ever making an obvious mistake.

When RO water is actually worth it

An RO unit strips your water back to near-nothing so you can rebuild it to a recipe. It is a real tool, and it is the correct answer for a narrow set of cases:

  • Discus and wild-caught soft-water fish. These are genuinely soft-acidic-water animals and they will not thrive here without intervention.
  • Caridina shrimp — crystal reds, bee shrimp. These need soft, acidic water and they are unforgiving about it. Note the trap: Neocaridina (cherry shrimp) are the opposite — they want your hard water and will fail to moult without the minerals in it. Two shrimp that look similar in a shop tank, two completely opposite requirements.
  • Serious aquascaping where plant selection and CO2 demand tight control.

For a community tank, an African cichlid tank, a betta, or a Neocaridina colony, an RO unit is money spent solving a problem you do not have. Buy a bigger tank instead. That actually helps.

Three things not to do

Don't Why
Chase pH with chemicals Buffered water fights back. You get a weekly rollercoaster instead of a stable "wrong" number, and the rollercoaster is what kills. Change the fish, not the water.
Rely on standing water to remove chlorine Works on free chlorine, does nothing to chloramine, and you cannot tell which you have. Use a conditioner rated for both.
Use bottled drinking water Expensive, and the mineral profile is unpredictable — some brands are nearly mineral-free, others are loaded. "Pure" water is not better water: fish need minerals, and a tank filled with near-zero-mineral water has no buffering at all, which means the pH can crash overnight. Treated tap water is both cheaper and safer.

Common questions

Can I use tap water for a water change? Yes. Dechlorinate it, match the temperature, and go. That is the whole procedure.

Do I need to age the water first? Not for chlorine, if you are using a conditioner — that works instantly. Letting it stand is still useful for one reason: it lets the temperature settle and the CO2 off-gas, so what you pour in is closer to what your tank is already living at.

My tap pH is 7.6 but my tank reads 8.1. What broke? Nothing. That is the CO2 effect described above, plus whatever your rocks and substrate contribute. Test a standing sample and compare with that instead.

Is UAE water harder in summer? Your tank almost certainly is — not because the tap changed, but because evaporation concentrated what was already in there. That is the top-up problem, and it is on you rather than the utility.

What is the single most useful thing I can do? Test your tap once, write the numbers down, and then pick fish that match them. Everything else in fishkeeping gets easier from there — and almost every expensive mistake people make in this country starts with skipping that ten minutes.
