The short answer
Tap water can be suitable for an aquarium once it has been tested and prepared for the animals you keep. Do not add untreated tap water or assume that a city-wide description tells you the pH, hardness or temperature at your own tap.
DEWA describes its drinking-water quality monitoring. Those drinking-water standards serve people; they do not establish the aquarium requirements of a particular fish or shrimp.
Check these before filling or changing water
- Disinfectant treatment: choose an aquarium conditioner labelled for the chlorine or chloramine in the supply. If uncertain, check with the supplier and select a product covering both.
- Temperature: measure the replacement water, not just the aquarium.
- pH: compare it with the species' suitable range and the aquarium's current reading.
- GH and KH: measure mineral hardness and buffering rather than inferring them from the city name.
- Other test results: a source-water baseline can help explain aquarium ammonia, nitrite or nitrate results.

Do not rely on a bucket left overnight
Standing water is not a dependable treatment for chloramine. Follow the conditioner label for dose, mixing and contact time; products do not all treat the same contaminants. OATA's water-quality guidance explains why chlorine and chloramine matter to both fish and biological filtration.

Match the fish to measured water conditions
Different fish have different temperature, pH and hardness requirements. A stable reading outside a species' suitable range is not automatically acceptable. Research the exact fish and the full community rather than treating all livebearers, cichlids or shrimp as interchangeable.
Avoid repeated pH adjustments without understanding KH and the cause of the reading. If your source water does not suit the planned stock, choose suitable livestock or develop a controlled water-preparation plan before buying fish. See choosing beginner fish for a UAE aquarium.
Check replacement-water temperature in hot weather
Do not assume the cold tap will deliver water at aquarium temperature. Building storage, plumbing and conditions can affect the water you draw. Use a clean aquarium-only container and a thermometer, allowing the prepared water to approach the appropriate temperature before adding it.
Do not pour very hot or very cold water directly into the aquarium to correct a mismatch. Follow safe equipment instructions when heating or cooling replacement water. See the water-change checklist for the full routine.
Retest when circumstances change
Keep a dated baseline, then compare it with new measurements when changing supply, installing a filter or water-treatment unit, or investigating unusual aquarium results. Testing after a sample has stood can help investigate changes, but that sample does not predict every aquarium's eventual pH: substrate, biological activity and CO2 can also influence it.
Top-up water and replacement water have different jobs
Evaporation leaves dissolved minerals behind, while a water change removes some of the old water and its dissolved contents. Repeated top-ups with mineral-rich water can increase concentration. Choose top-up water that maintains your system's intended chemistry, and continue normal water changes.
Do I need reverse-osmosis water?
Not automatically. Decide from measurements and species requirements, not from a claim that all Dubai water is too hard or that purified water is always better. Low-mineral water used for a complete fill or water change may need a controlled mineral and buffering plan. Do not replace the tank's water source abruptly.
Before your next water change
Confirm the replacement water's suitability, follow its treatment instructions, match temperature and add it carefully. Record any substantial source-water change.
