You can build a planted aquarium without automatically switching to reverse-osmosis water. Start by testing the water you actually use and matching the plants to it. A UAE address alone does not establish your aquarium’s hardness: source water, storage, treatment, substrate and any mixing all matter.
Measure before choosing plants
GH describes general hardness, largely associated with calcium and magnesium. KH describes buffering capacity, while pH describes acidity or alkalinity. They are related aspects of water chemistry, not interchangeable readings. Record all three, along with the aquarium temperature and the light setup. Do not lower hardness merely because one plant is struggling. First identify the species and inspect light, nutrition, planting depth and recent changes. If fish or shrimp are already present, their requirements and the safety of any gradual adjustment must remain part of the decision.

Match the planting method to the plant
Rooted rosettes and runners belong in a suitable substrate, with the growing crown accessible. Anubias and Java fern need their horizontal rhizomes above the substrate; roots are not the same structure as the rhizome. Moss can be secured to hardscape. Consider what nutrients your substrate and fertiliser actually provide. Root-zone supplements may help rooted plants in a depleted or inert bed, but there is no universal requirement to add every type of fertiliser on a fixed schedule.
What not to assume
- Not every Cryptocoryne, fern or moss has identical requirements.
- Red plants are not automatically unsuitable for harder water; exact species and light/carbon needs matter.
- A carpet is not impossible, but choose the plant and equipment together rather than copying a photograph.
- Hard-water tolerance does not prove tolerance of an overheated aquarium.
- New plants losing leaves is not enough evidence to diagnose hardness as the cause.
Measure tank temperature during the warmest part of the day, including any period when air conditioning is reduced. Use the aquarium cooling guide if needed; do not treat heat as an unavoidable feature of every UAE tank.
Establishment and follow-up
Plants can be added while a new aquarium is being established. They do not prove that the filter is ready for fish: complete and verify the nitrogen cycle before stocking. Remove decaying leaves, keep conditions stable and judge adaptation by healthy new growth. If deterioration continues, use the melting and yellowing checklist before changing water chemistry.
