Moving an aquarium means protecting three things: the animals, the physical tank and the established biological filter. Plan them separately, and have the destination ready before dismantling the old setup. No packing method can guarantee a risk-free move for every species or journey.
Before moving day
- Confirm the new stand, floor suitability, safe power and maintenance access using our placement checklist.
- Measure the tank and cabinet as separate moving pieces in mm. Check doorways, lifts and turning space, and agree a lifting method suitable for the actual weight.
- Compare the new water supply with the aquarium's temperature, pH and hardness. Prepare suitable conditioned replacement water.
- Arrange clean livestock containers, insulation, leak protection and any transport aeration appropriate to the species and journey.
- Get species-specific packing advice for large, delicate or unfamiliar animals. Do not assume one fasting period or bagging method suits juveniles and adults alike.
Record the equipment layout and label cables and hoses before disconnecting them. Have a temporary holding plan if installation is delayed. Avoid combining the move with an unnecessary deep clean or replacement of all filter media.
The aquarium travels empty
Aqueon's moving guidance warns against lifting an aquarium with water or gravel inside and recommends keeping established biological media wet. Remove livestock, water, substrate and heavy decor before the tank is carried. Follow the tank manufacturer's handling instructions and use suitable help or a specialist for a large system.
Disconnect equipment safely and follow the heater's cooling instructions before removal. Protect the empty aquarium from impact and twisting; do not lift it by a brace, pipe or decorative trim unless the manufacturer explicitly allows that method. Pack covers and equipment securely.
Protect fish and filter media
Keep incompatible animals and heavy decor out of the same transport container. Use secure containers designed for the job, with a suitable oxygen and temperature plan. Keep fish shaded and away from direct sun or an unattended hot vehicle. Check conditions throughout the journey; winter does not eliminate temperature risks.
Established filter media is important because biological filtration develops on surfaces, not simply in the old water. Keep the media wet, protect it from temperature extremes and minimise interruption. For longer delays, arrange suitable oxygenation and follow the filter maker's restart guidance. There is no universal number of hours after which every filter is safe or dead.

Rebuild before releasing the fish
- Inspect the empty tank, stand and connections for damage. Do not refill a compromised aquarium.
- Install the tank on its specified support and rebuild the substrate, decor and equipment safely.
- Fill with appropriately prepared water and verify temperature, circulation, filtration and leak-free operation.
- Compare holding-water and tank conditions. Use an acclimation plan suitable for the animals and transport-water quality; prolonged drip acclimation is not automatically best after every journey.
- Keep the first period calm and observe the animals closely.
Check the first week
Test ammonia and nitrite promptly after the move and frequently while the system settles. Record temperature and watch breathing, appetite and behaviour. Do not assume cloudy water is harmless, or that clear water proves the filter is coping.
If tests or behaviour show a problem, respond to the actual result with appropriate conditioned water changes, aeration and qualified advice where needed. Adjust feeding to the animals and the recovering system; do not add new livestock while troubleshooting.
