Prepare for the equipment that stops, not a promised number of safe hours. A power cut can interrupt aquarium circulation and filtration, vivarium heating and ventilation, and the room's air conditioning. The risks depend on the animals, the setup and the temperatures you actually measure.

Write down what your animals need
Record each enclosure's normal temperature range, equipment model numbers and the signs that should trigger a call for help. For a vivarium, include the required warm and cool zones and humidity where relevant. One room-temperature target is not suitable for every fish or reptile.
Keep thermometers readable without opening the enclosure unnecessarily. The RSPCA's hot-weather guidance recommends checking enclosure temperatures and keeping aquariums and vivariums out of direct sunlight.
Build and test a small emergency kit
- A compatible battery-operated aquarium air pump, airline and diffuser, with the backflow protection required by the manufacturer.
- Charged batteries or the correct spares, a torch and a thermometer that remains usable without mains power.
- The filter and other equipment manuals, including the restart and priming instructions.
- For reptiles, an appropriate secure, ventilated transport container and a prearranged destination if relocation becomes necessary.
- Your contact details, a local keyholder and an appropriate veterinary contact.
Test the backup with the actual equipment and load before an emergency. A battery air pump supports aeration; it does not automatically replace filtration, heating, cooling or a circulation pump. Check compatibility and measured runtime before relying on a UPS or power station.
Plan for loss of room cooling
Measure water and enclosure temperatures rather than judging by how the room feels. Keep secure lids and doors in place; opening a vivarium is not a safe cooling plan if the animal can escape. Do not put ice against an animal or make a sudden temperature change. If conditions cannot be maintained, seek species-specific advice and use your planned safe relocation arrangements.

Give the helper a short action sheet
List what to check, where the backup is, how to use it and when to call you. Tell the helper not to add extra food, chemicals or improvised electrical connections. Keep people away from wet plugs and damaged equipment; electrical faults need qualified help.
Check the restart, not just the lights
When power returns, confirm actual flow, normal water levels and safe equipment operation. Follow the filter's model-specific instructions and check water quality. An appliance lighting up does not prove that a pump has restarted. Record what worked and replace used batteries before putting the kit away.
