The 30-second verdict
Rock and wood are the only things in your tank that are simultaneously décor, furniture for the fish, and an ongoing chemistry input. That last part is what people miss.
- Some rocks dissolve slowly and raise your pH and hardness. In soft-water countries that is a tool. Here, where the water is already hard and alkaline, it usually pushes you further in a direction you did not choose.
- Wood does the opposite — it releases tannins that gently soften and acidify, and stains the water tea-brown for weeks.
- The safety test is one drop of vinegar, and it takes ten seconds.
Get the hardscape right at the start and it lasts the life of the tank. Get it wrong and it is a slow, invisible influence you will spend months misdiagnosing.
The vinegar test
Before any rock goes in the tank:
Put a few drops of white vinegar on it. If it fizzes, it contains carbonate — which means it will dissolve into your water and raise pH and hardness.
No fizz = inert = safe in any tank. Fizz = it is a buffering rock. That does not make it bad; it makes it a decision.
Do the test on a freshly broken or scratched surface, not a polished one, and give it a minute — slow fizzing counts.
Rocks: which does what

What this means in the UAE specifically
Your tap water is already hard and alkaline, around pH 7.5–8.2, and well buffered. Adding a buffering rock on top of that pushes further up.
For a general community or planted tank: choose inert rock. Dragon stone, lava, slate, granite. You do not need more buffering; you already have plenty.
For an African cichlid tank: buffering rock is a feature. Malawi and Tanganyika fish come from pH 7.8–8.6 hard water, so limestone and similar rock are working with the fish. This is one of the reasons a cichlid tank is such a natural fit here: the full build.
If your pH is climbing over months and you cannot explain it, look at your rock. That is usually the answer. (What pH stability actually means: reading your test kit.)
Driftwood: the two things everyone asks
Safe woods: Mopani, spider/redmoor, Malaysian, manzanita, cholla. Bogwood generally. All sold specifically as aquarium wood.
Never: wood found outdoors (resin, sap, pesticides, rot), anything treated or painted, pine and other resinous softwoods, and driftwood from a beach — salt-saturated.
"My wood floats"
Normal. Dry wood needs to become waterlogged, and depending on the piece that takes days to several weeks. Options:
- Soak it in a bucket for a week or two, changing the water. Slow but easy, and it removes tannins at the same time.
- Boil smaller pieces — speeds up both saturation and tannin release, and sterilises it.
- Weigh it down or attach it — screw or silicone it to a piece of slate and bury the slate under the substrate. This is what most aquascapers do, and it is the only reliable answer for large pieces.
"My water has gone brown"
Tannins. Harmless — mildly beneficial, in fact, and many soft-water fish come from water that looks exactly like this. But if you want it clear:
- Soak or boil the wood before it goes in — the more you extract beforehand, the less releases later.
- Activated carbon in the filter removes tannins quickly. Remember to take carbon out if you are ever dosing medication.
- Water changes. It fades over weeks to months on its own.
One note for here: tannins gently lower pH and reduce buffering. In our hard, well-buffered water that effect is small — you will not turn a pH 8 tank into a blackwater tank with one piece of wood. Do not count on driftwood as a pH strategy.
The white slime
New driftwood often grows a white or grey fungal biofilm in the first weeks. It looks alarming and is completely harmless — it is feeding on surface sugars and disappears on its own. Shrimp and snails eat it. Do not tear the tank apart over it.
Preparing hardscape before it goes in
- Scrub under running water with a stiff brush. No soap, ever — residue is lethal and impossible to fully rinse.
- Vinegar-test every rock.
- Boil or soak wood until it sinks and the water runs less brown.
- Inspect for sharp edges — particularly important if you keep long-finned fish like bettas or fancy goldfish, which tear easily and then get fin rot: why that matters.
- Never use soap, bleach or detergent. If something genuinely needs sterilising, boiling or a long sun-dry is the safe route.
Building it so it does not fall down
Two rules, and the first one has cracked a lot of tank bases:
1. Rocks go on the base glass, then sand around them. Not on top of the substrate. Fish dig — cichlids constantly, corydoras and loaches routinely — and they will excavate under a stack until it settles unevenly and a rock lands point-first on the glass. Build on the glass, ideally with a slate or foam pad underneath, and pour the substrate in afterwards.
2. Test every structure with a firm push before the water goes in. If it wobbles for you, it will collapse for them. Aquarium-safe silicone or cyanoacrylate gel is a legitimate way to lock a stack together.

Hardscape and plants
Wood and rock are not just scenery in a planted tank — they are where two of the easiest plants actually live. Anubias and java fern must be attached to hardscape, not planted in substrate: bury the rhizome and it rots. Tie them on with thread or fishing line, or use a dab of gel superglue, and the roots will grip within weeks.
Java moss does the same on any rough surface. This is why a low-tech planted tank starts with the hardscape: your first planted tank.
Common questions
Can I use rocks from the desert or the mountains here? Only after a vinegar test, a hard scrub, and accepting the risk of unknown contamination. Much of the local stone is carbonate-rich and will buffer strongly. For a community tank, buy inert aquarium rock instead — the saving is not worth a chemistry problem you cannot remove without stripping the tank.
How much hardscape is right? More than looks right when the tank is empty — water and plants visually shrink everything. For cichlids, the rock is the tank. For a planted tank, one strong focal piece beats several competing ones.
Will driftwood lower my pH enough to keep discus? No. Our water is too well buffered for wood to move it meaningfully. Soft-water species need an RO unit, not a bigger log.
My rock is growing green fuzz. Algae, and it means light and nutrients are out of balance rather than that the rock is faulty. Identify which type and fix the cause.
What is the one thing to get right? Vinegar-test before it goes in, and build on the glass rather than the sand. Those two prevent the two problems that are genuinely painful to fix later — an unexplained rising pH, and a cracked base.
