Your Aquarium Test Kit Numbers, Explained: What Each One Actually Tells You

The 30-second verdict

A liquid test kit gives you six numbers. Most beginners either ignore them all or panic at the wrong one. Here is the hierarchy:

Buy liquid, not strips. Paper strips drift with age and humidity, and humidity is not in short supply here. A liquid kit costs more once and is right for years.

Ammonia: the one that kills

Target: 0. Always. No exceptions.

Ammonia comes from fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying plants. In a cycled tank, bacteria convert it within hours and you never see it. If you are reading ammonia, that conversion is not happening.

What it does: chemically burns the gills. The fish gasps at the surface, its gills go red and inflamed, it clamps its fins and stops eating. And critically — the water looks perfectly clear the entire time.

If it is above 0: 50% water change immediately, stop feeding for two or three days, and repeat daily until it reads zero. Then work out why: new tank still cycling, filter cleaned too aggressively, too many fish added at once, overfeeding, or something died unseen behind the décor.

The temperature twist that matters here

This is worth understanding because it makes summer readings more dangerous than they look.

Ammonia exists in water in two forms: ionised ammonium (NH4+), which is relatively harmless, and free ammonia (NH3), which is the toxic one. Your test kit reports both together.

The balance between them shifts with pH and temperature: higher pH and higher temperature both push it toward the toxic form.

Which means a UAE tank — alkaline water around pH 8, sitting at 29 °C in August — converts a much larger share of that ammonia into the dangerous form than the same reading would in a cool, neutral tank in Europe. The same number on the chart is worse here. Treat any ammonia reading in summer as urgent.

Nitrite: the second emergency

Target: 0.

Nitrite is the middle step of the cycle: bacteria turn ammonia into nitrite, then a second group turns nitrite into nitrate. Seeing nitrite means the first group has arrived and the second has not.

What it does: binds to the fish's blood and prevents it carrying oxygen. The fish suffocates in fully oxygenated water — gasping, listless, sometimes with reddish gills.

If it is above 0: same response as ammonia. Water changes, stop feeding, daily testing.

A tank that reads ammonia 0 / nitrite 0 / nitrate something is a cycled tank. That is the definition.

Nitrate: your maintenance report card

Target: low. Under about 40 ppm for most community tanks; lower is better.

Nitrate is the end product of the cycle. It is far less toxic than the first two — it will not kill a fish overnight — but chronic elevation is one of the most under-diagnosed causes of poor health: faded colour, stunted growth, no breeding, susceptibility to disease. It is the invisible cause behind a lot of "my fish just never thrived."

The only real way to remove it is a water change. Plants use some; a heavily planted tank runs lower. But mostly, nitrate is a direct readout of how disciplined your water changes have been.

High nitrate means one of: not changing enough water, too many fish, overfeeding, or a filter full of trapped detritus.

The UAE evaporation trap

Here is a local pattern that confuses people every summer.

Evaporation removes water and leaves everything dissolved in it behind — including nitrate. So a tank that is topped up rather than water-changed gets steadily more concentrated, week after week, even though "the water level is fine."

In this climate evaporation is fast, so this compounds quickly. The rule: top up with RO or distilled water, change with dechlorinated tap water. They are different jobs. Full explanation.

pH: stop chasing it

Target: whatever your tap water gives you — held steady.

UAE tap water typically lands around pH 7.5–8.2. Every care sheet written abroad will tell you your fish wants 6.8. Ignore it.

A stable "wrong" pH is far safer than a pH that moves. Fish adapt remarkably well to steady water they did not evolve in. They do not adapt to water that changes every week.

The "pH Down" bottle works for about three days, then the water's buffering pulls it back, you dose again, and your fish live on a chemical rollercoaster. That rollercoaster does more damage than the number ever would.

Two readings that look wrong and are not

1. Your tap reads lower than your tank. Tap water is often supersaturated with dissolved CO2, which suppresses the pH reading. Let a glass stand 24 hours, retest, and you will usually see it rise. The 24-hour number is the one your tank will actually live at. A lot of people panic at this gap for no reason.

2. Your pH drops at night. In a planted tank, plants consume CO2 by day (pH rises) and produce it at night (pH falls). A daily swing of a few tenths is normal biology, not a fault.

GH and KH: the two nobody explains

These are the numbers people skip, and KH in particular is worth understanding because it explains something important.

GH — general hardness. The dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. This is the number that decides which species suit your water. KH — carbonate hardness. This is not the same as GH, and it is the more useful of the two. KH is your water's buffering capacity — its resistance to pH change.

Why it matters:

  • High KH = a stable pH. The buffer absorbs the acids produced by biological processes, and the pH holds. This is the good news for UAE keepers — your water is well buffered, so the catastrophic overnight pH crash that plagues soft-water tanks essentially does not happen to you.
  • Low KH = danger. Little buffering means the pH can crash suddenly, which kills fish fast. This is the specific risk of filling a tank with pure RO or "purified" bottled water and no remineralisation — mineral-free water is not better water.
  • KH is why pH-Down does not work. You are fighting the buffer, and the buffer wins. If you genuinely need soft water, you change the water source (RO), not the pH with a bottle.

How to test properly

  1. Same time of day, every time. pH varies over the day in a planted tank; comparing a morning reading to an evening one tells you nothing.
  2. Shake the reagent bottles — especially the second nitrate bottle, which needs vigorous shaking or it reads falsely low. This is the most common testing error there is.
  3. Read against white, in daylight, at the time the instructions state.
  4. Write it down. One sheet of paper with dates. Six months from now, when something goes wrong, that log is the difference between diagnosing and guessing.
  5. Check the expiry. Reagents degrade — faster in heat and humidity. A kit that has been in a hot cupboard for two years is giving you fiction.

How often

  • New tank, cycling: ammonia and nitrite every day.
  • First month with fish: ammonia and nitrite twice a week.
  • Established tank: nitrate weekly-ish; the rest monthly.
  • Something is wrong: everything, immediately — that is the whole point of owning the kit.
  • After a power cut or a big filter clean: ammonia and nitrite daily for a week. Why.

Reading the numbers together

Pattern What it means
Ammonia 0 · Nitrite 0 · Nitrate present Cycled and healthy. This is the goal.
Ammonia high · Nitrite 0 · Nitrate 0 Cycle just started, or the filter was destroyed.
Ammonia falling · Nitrite high Mid-cycle. The dangerous middle. Keep changing water.
Ammonia 0 · Nitrite 0 · Nitrate very high Cycled but under-maintained. Water changes.

Common questions

Do I really need a test kit? Yes. It is the only instrument in this hobby that shows you the invisible, and every diagnostic conversation starts with these numbers. Without it, you are guessing about the three things most likely to kill your fish: the diagnostic order.

My tank has been running a year. Do I still need to test? Less often — but keep testing nitrate, because that one drifts slowly and invisibly. And test everything the moment anything looks off.

Should I use a product that "locks" ammonia? Detoxifiers convert ammonia to a less harmful form temporarily and are a legitimate emergency tool. They do not fix the cause, and most test kits still show the total — so the reading stays scary. Use one to buy time, then do the water changes.

What is the single most useful habit? Test your tap water once and write down all six numbers. That is your baseline. Everything you ever diagnose afterwards is a comparison against it.
