The 30-second verdict
It is July, your tank reads 31 °C, and the fish are hanging at the surface gulping. Before you buy anything, understand what you are actually looking at:
Your fish are not too hot. They are short of oxygen.
Warm water physically cannot hold as much dissolved oxygen as cool water. At 25 °C, fresh water saturates at roughly 8.3 mg/L of oxygen. At 30 °C, it is about 7.6. At 32 °C, about 7.0. Meanwhile the fish's metabolism has sped up in the heat, so they need more oxygen at exactly the moment the water can hold less of it. That gap is what kills.
So the fix list, ranked by how much good it does per dirham:
- Add surface agitation. Costs almost nothing. Fixes most of the problem.
- Feed less and stock lighter. Free. Second-biggest lever.
- Cut the light hours. Free.
- Run a fan across the water surface. Cheap. Buys you 1–3 °C.
- Buy a chiller. Expensive, noisy, heats your room. Genuinely necessary for perhaps one tank in twenty.
Most people skip straight to number five. Numbers one to four solve it for most tanks in this country.
What temperature is actually a problem?
Here is the part that surprises people: 28–30 °C is fine for the overwhelming majority of tropical freshwater fish. Guppies, platies, rasboras, corydoras, bettas, most cichlids — they are all comfortable there. Some of them breed there.
The trouble starts in three specific situations:
- Above roughly 31–32 °C, the oxygen deficit gets steep enough that even hardy fish start struggling.
- Cool-water species in a warm room. Goldfish are the classic case — they are not tropical fish, and a UAE living room keeps them chronically stressed all year. No amount of cooling gear fixes a species mismatch. The honest answer there is a different fish. (See what actually survives here.)
- Rapid swings. A tank that goes 27 → 32 → 26 in a day is far more dangerous than a tank that sits at 30 °C forever. Stability beats the ideal number, every time.
Which means: before you fight the heat, check whether you actually have a heat problem or an oxygen problem. They look identical from the outside — fish at the surface, breathing fast — and they have completely different fixes.
Fix 1: Surface agitation (do this today)

Oxygen enters water at one place: the surface. Not through the plants, not through the filter media — the surface. The bigger and more disturbed that surface is, the faster oxygen dissolves in and CO2 gasses out.
Three ways to get it, in order of effort:
- Angle your filter outlet upward so it ripples the surface instead of pushing water sideways under it. This is free and takes ten seconds, and on many tanks it alone ends the gasping.
- Add an air stone. The bubbles themselves do little — the oxygen transfer happens because the rising column drags water up and churns the surface. That is why a stone in the corner beats a stone buried under gravel.
- Lower the water line by a centimetre or two so the filter return breaks the surface properly.
The catch: if you run CO2 on a planted tank, aggressive surface agitation will strip it out and your plants will sulk. The usual compromise is to run the air stone at night, when the plants are consuming oxygen rather than producing it — which is also, not coincidentally, when most summer suffocations happen. Fix 2: Feed less, stock lighter
Every fish in the tank is competing for a shrinking oxygen supply, and every uneaten pellet is bacteria food — and bacteria consume oxygen too. A tank that was comfortably stocked in February can be over its limit in July without a single fish being added.
In summer: feed a little less, remove uneaten food promptly, and resist the urge to add new fish between June and September. If you are already at the edge, this is the cheapest way back from it.
Fix 3: Cut the lights
An aquarium light — particularly an older or high-output unit sitting directly on a closed lid — dumps real heat into the water. Two easy wins:
- Shorten the photoperiod to 6 hours in the hottest months. Your plants will cope; your algae will actually thank you for it less than you fear.
- Run the lights at night, when the room is coolest — and lift the fixture a few centimetres off the glass so heat is not trapped between lamp and lid.
Fix 4: A fan across the surface
This is the single most effective cheap intervention, and it works by evaporation: a small clip fan blowing across the water surface (not down at it, and not at the glass) will typically pull the tank 1–3 °C below room temperature.
Two catches, and the second one matters more than people realise:
- Evaporation accelerates enormously. You may be topping up daily instead of weekly.
- What you top up with changes your water chemistry. Evaporation removes water but leaves the minerals behind, so the tank gets steadily harder and more concentrated. If you keep topping up with tap water — which here is already hard — you are stacking hardness on hardness, month after month. Top-ups should be RO or distilled water; water changes are what use tap water. Confusing the two is one of the quiet ways a UAE tank drifts out of range over a summer.

Fix 5: A chiller — and when it is honestly worth it
A chiller is a refrigeration unit plumbed into your tank's flow. It works, it is precise, and it is the correct answer for a narrow set of cases:
- Large display tanks where a fan cannot move enough water.
- Genuinely temperature-sensitive livestock — certain shrimp, cool-water species, some reef setups.
- Tanks in a villa or a room the AC does not properly reach.
The catches nobody puts in the product description: a chiller needs a separate pump to push water through it (budget for that too); it exhausts heat into the room it stands in, so a chiller in a closed cabinet will fight itself; and it is the loudest thing you will add to a living room. Also, running a chiller on a tank whose real problem was oxygen just gives you a cold, still, suffocating tank.
Our honest position: get fixes 1 to 4 in place first, watch the tank for a week, and only then decide whether you have a chiller-shaped problem. Most people do not.
The three "fixes" that make it worse

The scenario to actually plan for: a summer power cut
Heat alone is survivable. Heat plus a dead filter is what empties a tank.
When the power goes out in July, three things stop at once: the filter stops moving water, the surface goes still, and the room starts warming. Oxygen falls, and the bacteria in your filter media — which are aerobic — begin dying in the dark, stagnant canister.
Two things worth owning before you need them:
- A battery or rechargeable air pump. This is the whole insurance policy. Water movement and surface agitation are what buy you hours.
- The knowledge that a filter off for more than a few hours should be rinsed before restarting — restarting a canister that has gone anaerobic pushes a slug of foul water into the tank. Small tanks heat faster

A 20-litre nano will track the room temperature almost hour for hour. A 200-litre tank has enough thermal mass to ride out an afternoon.
This is the summer version of the argument we make everywhere: volume is forgiveness. It is not about fitting more fish in — it is that a bigger body of water changes slowly, and slow change is survivable. Common questions
Should I unplug the heater in summer? No — leave it in, set to 26 °C. It will simply never switch on. Its job is to catch the night the AC is off and the tank falls to 21 °C. Unplugging it removes your floor and gains you nothing.
My tank sits at 30 °C all summer. Is that bad? Not by itself, for most community fish, provided it is stable and well-oxygenated. Stable-and-oxygenated at 30 °C beats swinging-and-still at 27 °C.
Will more plants add oxygen? During the day, yes. At night they consume it, alongside the fish and the bacteria — which is precisely why the pre-dawn hours are when heavily planted tanks lose fish in summer. Plants are not an oxygen strategy. An air stone is.
How do I know if it is oxygen and not disease? If several fish are at the surface at once, breathing fast, with no spots, no fungus and no other symptom — and it is worse in the early morning — it is oxygen. Increase agitation and see if it resolves within the hour. Medication will not fix it and will only stress them further.
What should I do right now? Angle the filter outlet up. Turn on an air stone. Cut the light to six hours. Feed a bit less. Check the temperature is stable rather than chasing a number. Then wait a week before you spend anything.
