Sand, Gravel or Aquasoil? Choosing Aquarium Substrate in the UAE

Almost every other decision in this hobby is reversible. You can swap a filter on a Tuesday, replace a heater in ten minutes, rearrange your hardscape whenever the mood strikes. Substrate is different. Once the tank is full, the plants are rooted and the fish are swimming, changing what is on the bottom means tearing the whole thing down and starting again.

Which is why it is worth twenty minutes of thought before you buy a single bag.

The good news is that this is not a complicated decision once you know what substrate is actually for. Most of the confusion online comes from people arguing about setups that have nothing to do with yours.

What substrate actually does

Four things, in rough order of importance:

  • It houses bacteria. Not as much as your filter media, but a meaningful amount. This matters most in the first months while your tank is establishing.
  • It anchors plants. Rooted plants need something to grip. Some substrates also feed them; most do not.
  • It changes fish behaviour. Corydoras, loaches and other bottom-dwellers sift substrate through their gills. On the wrong material they stop doing it, and over time their barbels erode.
  • It affects your water chemistry. Some substrates are chemically inert. Others actively push your pH and hardness up or down. Getting this wrong is the quiet cause of a lot of unexplained fish loss.

Notice what is not on that list: looking nice. It matters, but it should be the tiebreaker, not the starting point.

Gravel: the forgiving default

Standard aquarium gravel in the 2–5 mm range is the most boring recommendation in this article and, for most people reading it, the correct one.

What it does well: it is chemically inert, so it will not fight your water chemistry. It does not compact, so you will never get the dead anaerobic pockets that worry people about deep sand. It is easy to vacuum during a water change — push the siphon in, waste comes up, gravel drops back. It is cheap, and it lasts forever.

What it does badly: it contains no nutrients whatsoever. Root-feeding plants like swords and cryptocorynes will sit and sulk in bare gravel until you push root tabs in beside them. That is a perfectly workable system — it is how a lot of nice low-tech planted tanks run — but you should know it is a monthly job, not a one-time purchase.

The size trap: the chunky 10–15 mm decorative pebbles sold in a lot of shops look great and are a genuine problem. Uneaten food and waste fall into the gaps, sit where your siphon cannot reach, and rot. If you like the look, keep it as a decorative top layer over a small patch, not as your whole floor.

Sand: right for the fish, fussier for you

If you want corydoras, kuhli loaches, or anything else that spends its life with its face in the floor, sand is not a style preference. It is the correct habitat.

What it does well: bottom-dwellers behave naturally on it — sifting, burrowing, doing the things that make them interesting to watch in the first place. Waste sits on top of sand rather than sinking into it, which means you can see exactly how dirty your tank is and hoover it off the surface easily. And it looks superb under a decent light.

What it does badly: it demands a slightly different cleaning technique. You hover the siphon just above the surface rather than digging in, or you will vacuum half your substrate into the bucket. Very fine sand can also find its way into filter intakes and chew up an impeller over time — worth a sponge pre-filter if you are running a canister.

The depth rule: keep sand under about 5 cm unless you are deliberately building a planted bed. Deep, undisturbed fine sand can develop anaerobic pockets. This is less catastrophic than the internet suggests, but the fix is trivial: run your finger through the sand occasionally, or keep a few burrowing snails, and it never becomes an issue.

The mistake that actually costs people fish: buying the wrong white sand. Coral sand, aragonite and crushed shell are all sold in the same aisle as inert silica sand, and they are not the same product. They dissolve slowly and push your hardness and pH up. If you are setting up an African cichlid tank on Dubai tap water, that is a feature and you should use it deliberately. If you are keeping tetras, rasboras or anything soft-water, it is a slow-motion problem you will spend months failing to diagnose. Read the bag.

Aquasoil: powerful, and more demanding than the photos suggest

Aquasoil is baked, nutrient-rich granulated soil, sold under a dozen brand names. It grows plants beautifully. It is also the option most likely to go wrong for a first tank, and in the UAE it has a specific catch.

What it does well: it feeds root-feeding plants directly, no tabs needed, and it holds them firmly while they establish. Carpeting plants that struggle in gravel will genuinely take off in it. Most aquasoils also buffer pH downward, into the range that tetras, rasboras, discus and shrimp prefer.

The UAE catch: that buffering capacity is finite, and our tap water is hard and alkaline. Every water change you do refills the tank with water that pushes back the other way. In a soft-water country a bag of aquasoil might buffer for two or three years. Here it can be functionally exhausted much faster, and you end up with expensive substrate that is now just — substrate. If you specifically want soft-water conditions long term, the honest answer is that the substrate is not the tool for the job; you would need to be treating the water itself, which is a much bigger commitment. For most people the smarter path is to pick fish that suit the water we actually have.

Other things to know: new aquasoil leaches ammonia for the first few weeks. That is not a defect — it is why you cycle the tank before adding fish rather than after. It breaks down into mud over roughly one to two years and needs replacing. And it turns your water into brown fog if you disturb it hard, so plant carefully and fill onto a plate or a bag.

How deep, and how to build it

For a standard community tank: 3–5 cm, roughly level. That is enough to root plants and enough to look like a floor rather than a dusting.

If you want depth at the back for a sense of scale — and you should, it is the cheapest visual upgrade there is — do not just pile it higher and hope. It slides forward within weeks. There is a proper way to build terraces and slopes that hold their shape, and it takes about the same effort as doing it wrong.

You can also mix approaches. Capping a thin layer of aquasoil with 2 cm of fine gravel gives you nutrients underneath and a stable, vacuumable surface on top. Just accept that you have committed permanently — you cannot un-mix it later.

Rinse it. Then rinse it again.

Every bag of gravel and sand arrives coated in fine dust. Skip this step and you get a week of milky water and a lot of unnecessary panic about whether something is wrong with your new tank.

Work in batches. Half-fill a bucket with substrate, run a hose into it, stir with your hand, tip the cloudy water off, repeat. Sand takes longer than you expect — keep going until the runoff is genuinely clear, not nearly clear. Ten minutes of this is the difference between a tank that looks finished on day one and one that looks like a dust storm until Thursday.

The exception is aquasoil, which is never rinsed — you would wash away the nutrients and turn it to sludge. Straight from the bag into the dry tank.

Match it to your stock

Work backwards from the animals, not from the photo you liked:

  • Corydoras, loaches, eels, anything that burrows — sand. Not negotiable if you want them healthy long term.
  • African cichlids — aragonite or coral sand, used deliberately to hold hardness and pH high.
  • General community tank — fine gravel, 2–5 mm. Add root tabs if you plant.
  • Low-tech planted — gravel with root tabs, or capped aquasoil if you want the plants to be the point.
  • Shrimp — fine dark gravel or sand. Dark substrate makes cherry shrimp colour up dramatically, and the contrast is half the reason people keep them.
  • Quarantine or grow-out tank — nothing at all. Bare glass is easier to keep spotless and easier to medicate, which is exactly what those tanks are for.

One more consideration that people forget until it is too late: your substrate choice affects your cleanup crew options. Nerite snails and shrimp are happy on anything, but the corydoras you might have added to help keep the floor tidy will only thrive on sand — so if a clean bottom is part of your plan, decide the substrate first and the crew second.

The hardscape interaction

Substrate is not the only thing on your floor that can move your water chemistry. Certain rocks leach carbonates just as steadily as coral sand does, and driftwood does the opposite, releasing tannins that tint the water and nudge pH down. If you are aiming for a specific set of parameters, the substrate and the driftwood and rock you choose have to agree with each other. A bag of inert gravel underneath a pile of limestone is not an inert tank.

The short version

If you are setting up your first tank and you want one sentence: buy 2–5 mm inert gravel, lay it 3–4 cm deep, rinse it properly, and add root tabs when you plant. It suits our tap water, it forgives mistakes, it never needs replacing, and it will not quietly sabotage your water chemistry while you try to work out why the tetras keep dying.

Choose sand if you want corydoras or loaches, because they deserve it. Choose aquasoil if plants are genuinely the point of the tank and you have read the caveats above and still want it.

And whichever you pick — get it right the first time. It is the one layer of this hobby that does not offer a second chance without a bucket, a spare tank and a very long afternoon.
