Black beard algae is stubborn, but it is not a reason to tear an aquarium apart or add every treatment on the shelf. The dark, short bristles that hold onto driftwood, slow-growing leaves, filter outlets and hardscape are best handled with two jobs at once: remove what is badly affected, then make the aquarium less rewarding for the next patch.
In a UAE home aquarium, the useful question is not whether the room is hot outside. It is whether the tank's routine is steady inside: filter flow, light timing, water changes, feeding, plant care and—if you inject it—CO2. A stable low-tech aquarium can be very successful without added CO2; an injected tank needs a stable, species-safe routine rather than sudden corrections.
First: make sure it is actually black beard algae
Black beard algae, often shortened to BBA or black brush algae, usually appears as dense dark grey, green-black or nearly black tufts. It grips hard. You may see it on the edge of an older Anubias leaf, on a rock, at the lip of a filter outlet or along textured wood. Unlike a soft brown dust, it does not wipe away in one pass of an algae pad.
Do not diagnose from colour alone. Dark detritus, dying plant tissue and ordinary hair algae can look similar in a quick photo. Take a clear close-up, note where it is growing and check whether that area is collecting debris or receiving unusually strong or uneven flow. What black beard algae is telling you
BBA is rarely solved by chasing a single magic number. It often gains ground when the aquarium is inconsistent: accumulated organic waste, neglected mechanical filtration, dying leaves, unstable lighting, uneven circulation or swings in an injected CO2 routine. That does not mean every tank with BBA has the same cause, and it does not mean you should make five changes on the same day.
Start a short log instead. Record the light start and finish time, water-change date, filter flow, feeding, plant trimming, test results and any change to CO2 equipment. A pattern is easier to spot in a log than in a tank that is adjusted every evening. Use your aquarium test-kit results to rule out a water-quality problem before assuming algae is the only issue.
The safe first response: remove the worst growth
- Photograph the affected areas. It gives you a genuine before-and-after record and helps you see whether new growth slows.
- Trim leaves that are heavily covered. A badly affected old leaf is not a recovery project. Prune it cleanly, without stripping a plant of all usable leaves at once.
- Remove hardscape only when it is easy and safe. Lift a small removable rock or piece of wood only if this will not collapse the scape or trap fish. Scrub the algae away outside the aquarium using a dedicated aquarium brush and rinse with conditioned water.
- Siphon loose debris during the water change. Get the dislodged material out of the system rather than letting it settle elsewhere.
- Clean the restriction, not the biological filter to perfection. If the intake, prefilter or mechanical sponge is obstructed, restore flow. Preserve established biological media and rinse reusable material in removed aquarium water.

Then improve the conditions—one controlled change at a time

Light is a common place to overcorrect. Shortening or changing the schedule every day makes it difficult to learn what helped. Set a realistic timer routine, then hold it while you observe. Do not buy a "clean-up crew" as a chemical substitute
Some animals may pick at young algae, but no fish, shrimp or snail is a guarantee against mature black beard algae. Choose livestock because the aquarium has the volume, social conditions and water parameters it needs—not because it has been assigned a maintenance job. Adding an unsuitable fish to solve an algae outbreak can create a bigger stocking and waste-load problem.
If you are considering any animal as part of a planted-tank plan, revisit the tank size, existing occupants and feeding plan first. The goal is a balanced community, not a disposable algae tool.
Be cautious with spot treatments
Targeted commercial treatments are sometimes used by experienced keepers, but they are not the first move for a tank with fish, shrimp, snails, mosses or sensitive plants. Do not guess a dose from a video, combine chemicals, or treat the whole aquarium simply because one piece of wood has a dark patch. If you choose an aquarium product, follow its current label exactly and check compatibility with every animal and plant in the tank.
Pause treatment and seek species-specific help if fish breathe rapidly, lose balance, clamp their fins, or if you are unsure what the algae is. Water quality and oxygen come before appearance. A two-week reset that does not reset the aquarium
- Day 1: Photograph, prune the worst leaves, remove accessible tufts, restore normal filter flow and perform a measured water change.
- Days 2–7: Keep light, feeding and equipment timing steady. Remove dying leaves and record observations; do not add livestock as a reaction.
- Week 2: Retest water, inspect the original marked areas and remove only fresh, accessible growth. If it is spreading despite a stable routine, ask for help with photos, tank volume, filter model and the maintenance log.
