The short answer

The hardest aquarium plants to kill are the ones you never plant: anubias, java fern and bucephalandra. These are epiphytes — in nature they grow attached to rocks and wood, not rooted in soil — so in the aquarium you tie or glue them to hardscape and they simply live there. They thrive in hard UAE tap water, need no CO2, no special substrate and only modest light. There is exactly one rule that kills them, and it is the one beginners break on day one: never bury the rhizome. Plant it like a normal stem plant and it rots; tie it to a rock and it lives for years.

What an epiphyte is, and why it changes everything

Most planted-tank advice revolves around substrate: nutrient soil, root tabs, planting depth. Epiphytes opt out of all of it. The plant is built around a rhizome — the thick horizontal stem that leaves grow up from and roots grow down from — and those roots are anchors, not feeders. The plant drinks from the water column directly.

That one fact unlocks the easiest version of a planted tank: no aqua soil needed (plain sand or gravel is fine, per the substrate guide), no root tabs, no replanting, and full freedom to put greenery where substrate plants can't go — on wood, on rock, in a bare-bottom tank, halfway up the hardscape. The one rule: the rhizome stays in open water

Bury that thick horizontal stem in substrate and it suffocates — the plant yellows, softens and rots away over weeks, and the keeper concludes "I can't grow plants." Nothing was wrong except the burial. The rhizome must sit on top of things, in flowing water:

Within a month or two the white anchor roots grip the hardscape on their own and the plant is effectively part of the rock. Cichlids and goldfish that uproot everything else can't dig up a plant that isn't dug in — which is why anubias on rock is the standard greenery for a kribensis or African cichlid tank.

Slow growth: the superpower and the tax

Epiphytes grow slowly — an anubias leaf a month is healthy. The upside is a plant that never needs trimming schedules, never overruns the scape, and tolerates neglect. The tax is algae: a leaf that lives for years under light collects green spot and beard algae the way fast plants never do. Manage it like this:

  • Keep them shaded. Anubias under direct high light is an algae magnet; tuck it under wood, below taller plants, or at the shaded end. Moderate photoperiod per the light schedule guide.
  • Sacrifice ugly leaves. An algae-crusted old leaf never recovers — cut it at the base and let the rhizome push new ones. The technique is in the trimming guide.

Meet the trio properly

Anubias is the tank: thick, dark, almost plastic-tough leaves that nothing eats — betta keepers, cichlid keepers and goldfish keepers all end up here. Varieties run from palm-sized barteri down to coin-sized nana petite. It even flowers underwater — a small white spathe like a tiny peace lily, a bonus most keepers see eventually.

Java fern is the volume: long blade leaves that build a green backdrop fast (by epiphyte standards). Old leaves grow black bumps and then plantlets — baby ferns you pull off and attach elsewhere; the plant propagates itself into a colony. Windelov (lace-tip) and narrow-leaf forms vary the texture.

Bucephalandra is the jewellery: small, slow, iridescent — leaves shimmer blue-purple under good light. It costs more and grows slowest, so start with one piece glued somewhere prominent. In hard water it is far tougher than its boutique reputation suggests; treat it as slow-motion anubias.

Why is my anubias rotting?

Almost always because the rhizome — the thick horizontal stem — is buried in substrate. It must sit in open water, tied or glued on top of hardscape. Dig it up, cut away any mushy rhizome back to firm tissue, and reattach it above the substrate; healthy sections recover.

Do anubias and java fern need CO2 or special light?

No. All three epiphytes thrive under low to medium light with no CO2 injection — that is the point of them. Strong light does not make them grow much faster; it mostly grows algae on their slow leaves.

How do you attach aquarium plants to rocks and wood?

Tie the rhizome on with cotton thread or fishing line, or fix it with a small dot of cyanoacrylate super glue gel, or simply wedge it into a crack. Within weeks the roots grip the surface on their own and the fixing becomes redundant.

Why are my java fern leaves turning black or growing babies?

Small black bumps and windowed patches on old leaves are usually the plant making plantlets — baby ferns you can detach and attach elsewhere. Solid black mushy areas on the rhizome are rot; leaf-edge blackening across the plant can also signal a potassium shortage worth a light liquid dose.

Is bucephalandra hard to keep?

No — just slow and pricier. In hard water it behaves like a smaller, slower anubias: attach it, shade it moderately, and leave it alone. Give it stable conditions and it rewards you with leaves that shimmer blue.

Are epiphyte plants safe with cichlids and goldfish?
