If ammonia is showing on your aquarium test, treat it as a water-quality emergency—not a reason to add a random chemical or replace every filter sponge. Stop feeding for the moment, keep the filter and surface movement running, test ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, then make a careful water change with prepared water. After that, find the cause before adding more fish or food.
In a Dubai summer, a water-quality problem can become more stressful faster because warm water carries less oxygen. The immediate priorities are therefore simple: keep the fish supplied with oxygen, avoid sudden temperature or pH shifts, and protect the biological filter that has to process the waste.
First: make sure this is really an ammonia problem
Most hobby test kits report total ammonia nitrogen, which combines ammonia and ammonium. The more harmful un-ionised ammonia fraction increases as pH and temperature rise. That means the same kit reading can have a different risk in two aquariums. Do not dismiss a detectable reading, but do record the whole picture before making a drastic correction.
Write down:
- ammonia and nitrite readings, including the kit’s unit;
- pH and temperature;
- when the aquarium was set up or when fish were last added;
- whether filter flow, power or cleaning changed recently; and
- any signs such as surface-gasping, rapid breathing, lethargy, loss of appetite or a dead fish.
If the result is unexpected, test again with clean equipment and check the replacement-water source too. Some municipal supplies use chloramine; untreated replacement water can harm fish and the beneficial bacteria your aquarium needs.
Do these four things now
- Stop feeding temporarily. Food that is not eaten quickly becomes more waste. A short pause is safer than adding more load while the aquarium is trying to recover.
- Keep oxygen and circulation up. Leave the filter running and make sure its outlet is moving the surface. Add an air stone if you have one. Do not seal the tank tighter in an attempt to “hold in” oxygen.
- Make a prepared, measured water change. Use dechlorinated water suitable for the source supply and bring it close to the aquarium temperature. For a clearly high ammonia reading, a substantial partial change is often the immediate first intervention. Re-test before deciding whether another change is needed, rather than making a blind, all-at-once reset.
- Check that the filter is actually flowing. A blocked intake, an empty canister after a restart, a stalled impeller or a filter switched off during cleaning can turn a stable tank into an ammonia problem. Restore normal flow, but do not replace all established media.
There is one important exception to the urge for a dramatic change: an old, neglected aquarium with unusually low pH can behave differently. Raising pH quickly can convert more ammonium into the more toxic ammonia form. If you suspect this situation, or fish are severely distressed, make only carefully prepared changes while getting species-appropriate help with the current test results.

A running filter is not proof that the biofilter is healthy. If it has been off for hours, deeply cleaned, allowed to run dry or starved of oxygen, test the tank during and after recovery. Find the cause before the next feed
High ammonia is a result, not a diagnosis. These are the common patterns to investigate:

- Too much food, a missing fish or decaying plant matter: remove the source carefully and reduce the next feeds. Check behind hardscape and around the filter intake.

How to monitor the recovery
Test ammonia and nitrite daily while either is detectable, and keep a short log of results, pH, temperature, changes made and fish behaviour. You are looking for a trend toward safe readings—not a single reassuring test after a major water change. Nitrite can rise as the biofilter recovers, so an improving ammonia result does not mean the process is finished.
When readings are back to the normal safe range for your livestock, restart feeding lightly and increase only as fish behaviour and water tests stay stable. Hold off on new fish, a full filter overhaul or an aggressive substrate clean until the aquarium has been stable for a while.
When to get urgent help
Seek immediate species-appropriate veterinary or experienced aquatic-care help if multiple fish are gasping or rolling, the reading remains high after prepared water changes, the filter cannot be restored, or the aquarium contains sensitive species, fry, shrimp or valuable fish. Share the tank volume, species and count, ammonia/nitrite/pH/temperature readings, source-water treatment, filter type, and the last changes you made. Those facts are more useful than a photo of clear water.

Can I feed fish when ammonia is high?
Pause feeding while you confirm the problem and start the initial corrective steps. Once the aquarium is improving, restart with a small amount that is fully eaten. More food means more waste for an already overloaded system.
Will a water conditioner solve high ammonia on its own?
A conditioner can make replacement water safe for its intended use, but it does not repair the underlying cause: too much waste, insufficient biological capacity, poor flow or an unstable aquarium. Continue testing and investigate why the reading appeared.
Should I replace my filter media after an ammonia spike?
Usually not. Established biological media is part of the solution. Restore flow and only clean it gently if it is clogged, using removed aquarium water rather than untreated tap water.
