Before a fish tank is delivered, confirm the route into your home, the final footprint, the support underneath it and the safe position of power and water. A beautiful aquarium can still become an expensive problem if the cabinet cannot turn through the hallway, the lift is too small, the floor is uneven or the chosen wall is directly under harsh sun or an air-conditioning vent.

Start with the destination, not the box
Choose the permanent position before you order. Moving a filled aquarium is a different project from moving an empty one: water, glass, the cabinet, substrate and equipment add substantial weight, and fish should never be left inside for a casual room-to-room move. For a new aquarium, mark the proposed footprint with masking tape or a few sheets of cardboard. Stand where you will stand during routine maintenance. Can you reach the filter, lift the lid, clean the glass and make a water change without dragging the cabinet away from the wall? If the answer is no while the tank is empty, it will not become easier later.
The access check: measure the tightest point
Measure more than your front door. The limiting point may be a building entrance, a parking turn, a lift doorway, a corridor corner or the final room door. Measure the clear opening and the available turning space, then compare them with the packaged dimensions supplied by the seller—not only the display-tank dimensions.

Plan for filled weight and stable support
A tank is not supported by its water volume alone. The eventual load includes the glass or acrylic, cabinet, water, substrate, rocks, wood and equipment. Use the tank maker’s stated filled weight where available; if it is not available, treat the decision as something to verify rather than guess. Use the manufacturer-approved cabinet or a purpose-built stand that supports the whole base as instructed. The top should be level, flat and free of grit. Do not improvise with a chest of drawers, a bowed shelf or scattered furniture blocks. Prepare the room before delivery day
Clear the route and the destination area. Remove small furniture, protect floors if needed and keep children and pets away from lifting zones. Have a tape measure, phone camera and the order details ready. If the tank will be assembled in place, leave enough room for the team to work without leaning large glass panels against unstable furniture.
Set up power safely before water is involved. A drip loop means each cable dips below the socket before rising to it, so water travelling down a cable is less likely to reach the outlet. Keep multi-plugs off the floor and do not run cords where they can be pinched by the cabinet. Do not connect equipment until its instructions say it is safe to do so.
At handover: inspect first, fill later
Before signing off or removing protective packaging, inspect the visible glass, edges, cabinet panels and silicone seams in good light. Photograph any crack, chip, deep scratch, damaged corner or moisture in packaging immediately and contact the seller through the agreed channel. Do not try to disguise damage with sealant or fill a visibly compromised aquarium “just to test it”.
Once the tank is in its final position, recheck that the stand and aquarium follow the maker’s setup instructions. Do not fill an aquarium that is rocking, visibly uneven or resting on an unsuitable surface. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any protective mat, levelling requirements and leak test. Delivery day is for safe placement and careful inspection, not for making every choice at once. Avoid adding fish, plants, decorations and chemicals in a hurry because the room is finally ready. Should I fill the aquarium as soon as it arrives?
Only after you have inspected the aquarium, followed the manufacturer’s setup instructions and confirmed that the stand is stable and level. Filling is not an appropriate way to test visible damage.
Is delivery day the right time to add fish?
