Nano Aquariums: What You Can Actually Keep in 10–30 Litres

The small glass cube is an easy thing to say yes to. It fits on a desk, it costs very little, it arrives in a box with a light already attached, and nothing about it looks like a commitment. In a Dubai apartment, where floor space is expensive and the landlord has opinions about drilling, it is often the only tank that makes sense.

Then three weeks later the fish are dead and nobody can explain why. The water looked clean. The filter was running.

Here is what the box does not tell you: a nano tank is not a simplified aquarium. It is a normal aquarium with the safety margin removed. Everything you would quietly get away with in a hundred litres finds you out in fifteen. That does not make small tanks a bad idea — some of the best-looking tanks in the world hold less water than a mop bucket — but it does mean the advice written for a beginner's 100-litre community tank is close to useless here.

Why small tanks are harder, in one word

Dilution. That is the whole thing.

A fish produces the same amount of ammonia whether it lives in 15 litres or 150. In the bigger tank that ammonia is spread through ten times as much water, so the concentration your fish actually sits in is ten times lower. Every mistake works the same way. Overfeed by one pinch and a large tank shrugs; a nano registers it. A 3 cm fish dies behind the hardscape and goes unnoticed in a big tank; in a nano it is a meaningful fraction of the biological load rotting in a small volume.

Temperature behaves the same way. A large body of water is thermally stubborn — it takes hours to move. Fifteen litres on a desk under a Dubai air-conditioning vent will track the room, and the room in a UAE flat is not stable: the AC cycles, someone opens the balcony door, the afternoon sun comes round. And evaporation. A nano loses water to a dry, air-conditioned flat at a rate that is small in absolute terms and large in proportional terms. Losing a litre a week from 150 litres is nothing. Losing a litre a week from 15 is losing seven per cent of the tank, and everything dissolved in that water stays behind. The honest volume: your 20-litre tank is not 20 litres

Tank volumes are calculated from the outside dimensions of the glass, full to the brim. You will never run it that way.

Subtract the freeboard — the 3 to 4 cm of air you leave at the top so the tank does not slop and so there is a gas exchange surface. Subtract the substrate, which in a nano is often a 4 to 5 cm bed because that is what plants want. Subtract the hardscape, because rock is dense and displaces properly. Subtract whatever the filter occupies.

Add all of that up and a nominal 20-litre cube is routinely holding 13 to 14 litres of actual water. A 30-litre is often 21 or 22. This is not a rounding error; it is a third of your safety margin gone before a single fish arrives. What each nano size can actually support

These are conservative on purpose. Every one of them assumes a cycled tank, real plants, and a keeper who does water changes.

Under 10 litres: invertebrates, or nothing

No fish. Not a betta, not a single guppy, not "just one" of anything. There is not enough water to buffer a single missed water change. What does work is a shrimp bowl or a snail tank — a heavily planted, mature, filtered 5 to 8 litres can hold a small colony of cherry shrimp very happily, because shrimp have a tiny bioload and graze biofilm continuously. 10–20 litres: one thing, done properly

This is the size where you pick a single idea and commit to it. A betta on his own, with a gentle filter, a heater you can trust, plants and a lid. Or a cherry shrimp colony, which will breed and become genuinely interesting. Or — if the tank is heavily planted and you are patient — a small group of one micro species such as chili rasbora or ember tetra, understanding that these fish are shy, tiny, and easy to lose.

20–30 litres: the first size with real choices

Thirty litres is where a nano stops being a novelty. You can run a betta with a few snails and some shrimp. You can run a shrimp colony alongside a small group of micro rasboras. You can, if the footprint is long rather than tall, keep a group of pygmy corydoras — and it must be a group, because corydoras are miserable alone.

That word footprint matters more than the litre count. Thirty litres arranged long and shallow is a far better tank than thirty litres arranged tall and narrow. Fish swim horizontally. A tall column gives you volume you cannot use and a small water surface, which is exactly the wrong trade in a warm climate where oxygen is the limiting factor.

The stocking rule that fails worst in nano tanks

You will see "one inch of fish per gallon" repeated everywhere. It is a poor rule in any tank and a dangerous one in a small tank, because it takes no account of adult size, waste output, territory, or the fact that a nano has no buffer against being slightly wrong. A single fancy goldfish is a few centimetres in the shop and a waste factory within a year — which is why goldfish do not belong in nano tanks at any stage of their life. The equipment that does not scale down

Heaters

This is the one that worries me most in small tanks. A stuck thermostat on a 50 W heater in 150 litres gives you a slow, survivable temperature climb. The same failure in 15 litres can cook the tank before you get home from work. Use the lowest wattage that will actually hold your target temperature, buy a heater with a reputation rather than the cheapest one in the box, and keep a separate thermometer so you are reading the water rather than trusting the dial. Filters

A sponge filter driven by a small air pump is close to the perfect nano filter: cheap, biologically enormous for its size, impossible to trap a shrimp in, and gentle enough that a betta is not blown around his own tank. Hang-on-back filters made for larger tanks are frequently too much flow for a nano and need baffling. Whatever you fit, do not switch it off overnight — the bacteria need the flow more than you need the silence, and a rattling filter is telling you something fixable rather than asking to be unplugged.

Lights

Nano tanks get overlit constantly, because the fixture sits very close to the substrate and small tanks are usually bought as a kit with whatever light the manufacturer had. Light intensity falls off sharply with distance, so a modest LED 20 cm above the sand is doing far more work than the same LED 50 cm up. The practical control you have is time, not brightness: a disciplined photoperiod is the difference between a planted nano and an algae farm. Lids

Small tanks evaporate proportionally faster and micro fish are excellent jumpers — chili rasbora and pygmy corydoras both carpet-surf given the chance. In a dry, air-conditioned flat a lid is doing two jobs at once. The full argument is here.

Nano maintenance runs on a different rhythm

The instinct is to do less maintenance on a small tank because there is less of it. The opposite is true, and the shape of the maintenance changes too.

Smaller and more frequent beats larger and occasional. Ten to fifteen per cent twice a week is far kinder than forty per cent once a fortnight, because in a nano a forty per cent change is a parameter earthquake — temperature, pH and hardness all move at once, and there is not enough remaining water to soften the shock. The fifteen-minute water change routine works fine at this scale; just scale the volume down and the frequency up, and match the temperature carefully, because a jug of tap water that would be lost in a large tank is a real fraction of a nano.

And test. A nano gives you almost no warning between "fine" and "not fine", so the numbers are your early warning system rather than your homework. Here is what each reading is telling you.

Cycling a nano: same process, less forgiveness

The nitrogen cycle does not care how big your tank is. What changes is how badly it goes if you rush it. In a large tank, a fish-in cycle is a bad idea that fish sometimes survive. In a nano, ammonia concentrates so quickly that the same approach is simply lethal. Cycle it empty, feed the bacteria with an ammonia source, and wait for the numbers rather than the calendar — the first thirty days, day by day. Plants do more work per litre in a nano than anywhere else

In a small tank, plants are not decoration. They consume ammonia and nitrate directly, they compete with algae, they give shrimp and shy fish the cover that makes them come out, and they stabilise a volume that is otherwise twitchy. Choose slow, hardy, hard-water-tolerant species rather than the demanding carpet plants you saw in a competition tank; the species that genuinely thrive in UAE hard water are listed here, and a low-tech planted tank with no CO2 is the right starting point. On the hardscape side, keep it light. Rock displaces water you cannot spare, and some rock raises your pH and hardness, which in Dubai you certainly do not need. Which materials are safe and which push your parameters is worth checking before you buy the pretty one.

The UAE variables that hit nano tanks first

Every local problem lands harder on a small volume. Summer travel is the obvious one: a large tank can be left for a week or two with a timer and an automatic feeder, while a nano cannot ride out the same absence, because evaporation, temperature drift and any small accident all compound faster. Read leaving your aquarium for the summer before you book anything, and be honest about whether someone can check on it.

Power cuts are the second. When the filter and heater stop, a nano's oxygen and temperature start moving within minutes rather than hours. The emergency plan is short and worth having ready.

The third is that a nano on a kitchen counter is in the path of cooking aerosols, cleaning sprays and hands that have just used sanitiser. Big tanks dilute that. Small ones do not.

When you should just buy the bigger tank

If the picture in your head is a school of tetras, some corydoras working the sand and a centrepiece fish, no nano will deliver it, and no amount of clever stocking will change that. That tank starts at around 60 litres and gets easier from there. The counter-intuitive truth of this hobby is that larger tanks are less work, not more, because water volume does the stabilising for you.

Quick answers

Can a betta live in a 5-litre tank? He can survive in one for a while. He will do much better in 15 to 20 litres with a heater, a gentle filter and plants, and the difference in his colour and behaviour is obvious within a fortnight.

Do nano tanks need a filter? Yes. An unfiltered bowl relies entirely on you never making a mistake. A small sponge filter costs very little and removes most of the risk.

How many fish in a 20-litre tank? Realistically, one betta, or one small group of a single micro species, or no fish at all if you would rather keep shrimp. Not a community.

Is a nano tank cheaper? The tank is. The running costs are similar, and the replacement livestock after a crash is not. Judge it on the tank you want to look at, not on the price.

How often should I change water in a nano? Small amounts twice a week rather than a large change occasionally. Top up evaporation with fresh dechlorinated water in between, never with more tap water than the tank lost.

Can I keep shrimp and a betta together in 20 litres? Sometimes. Some bettas ignore shrimp entirely and some hunt them methodically, and you cannot tell which you have until you try. Heavy planting and a mature shrimp colony improve the odds.

The bottom line

Nano tanks reward attention and punish drift. Pick one clear idea for the tank, work out the real water volume rather than the number on the box, use a gentle filter and a heater you trust, plant it properly, and change small amounts of water often. Do that and fifteen litres will give you something genuinely lovely to look at. Skip any one of them and the tank will tell you within a month.
