"How much does a fish tank cost to run?" is one of the most common questions we get, and almost every answer online is either a shrug or a number pulled from a British electricity bill. Neither helps if you live in Dubai, where the tariff structure is different, the summer is the problem rather than the winter, and half the equipment people worry about turns out to be trivially cheap while the thing nobody counts turns out to matter.
So here is the arithmetic, done properly. Not the setup cost — the ongoing monthly cost, itemised, for three realistic tank sizes, with every assumption stated so you can swap in your own numbers.
Quick answers
Roughly, what will a tank add to my monthly bill?
Less than you think. A 60 litre community tank uses around 20 kWh a month — about 6 AED of electricity. A 240 litre planted tank running a chiller through August might reach 130 kWh, or roughly 40 AED. Electricity is rarely the main cost of fishkeeping.
So what is the main cost?
Consumables and amortisation: food, dechlorinator, test reagents, filter media, fertiliser, and the slow replacement of heaters and pumps. For most tanks these together outweigh electricity by two or three times.
Do water changes cost much in water?
Essentially nothing. At DEWA residential water rates, 1,000 litres costs single-digit dirhams. A 30 litre weekly water change on a 120 litre tank costs about one dirham a month in water.
Is a chiller going to wreck my bill?
No, but it is the single biggest line item if you need one. A 1/4 HP chiller cycling five hours a day through summer adds roughly 20 AED a month. That is real, but it is far less than most people fear — and there are cheaper ways to get the same result.
What is the cost nobody budgets for?
Replacing livestock. A tank that kills fish costs more than a tank that does not, by a wide margin, and no amount of equipment efficiency compensates for it.
Four buckets
Every recurring cost of an aquarium falls into one of four categories: electricity, water, consumables, and the amortised replacement of equipment. We will take them in order, then add them up.

Bucket 1: electricity
What your tariff actually is
DEWA residential electricity is billed in slabs — the more you use in a month, the higher the rate on the upper portion. The bands run from roughly 23 fils per kWh at the bottom to around 38 fils at the top, and on top of that sits a fuel surcharge and VAT. For working purposes, most flats end up somewhere near 0.30 AED per kWh all in, and that is the figure used throughout this article.
Check your own bill rather than trusting that number. Three things shift it: if you are already a heavy user in a villa, your marginal kWh is billed in a higher band, so an extra 100 kWh costs more than it would for a light user. If you are in Abu Dhabi on ADDC or Sharjah on SEWA, the rate structure is different again. And if your building is on district cooling from Empower or Emicool, your air conditioning does not appear on your DEWA bill at all — which matters for the AC discussion further down.
The only formula you need
Monthly kWh = watts ÷ 1000 × hours per day × 30. Multiply by your rate. That is the whole method.
The trap is the word "watts." A 300 W heater is not a 300 W load — it is a 300 W load only while the element is actually on, which in a temperature-controlled room might be ten or fifteen percent of the time. Filters and air pumps, by contrast, genuinely run 24 hours a day at their rated draw. So the small always-on devices often cost more per month than the big intermittent ones.
A 60 litre community tank, itemised
Assumptions: internal or hang-on-back filter, a modest LED on an 8 hour photoperiod, a 100 W heater in a flat air-conditioned to about 24 °C, a small air pump, and a clip fan running through the hot half of the day in summer.

Six dirhams. Less than a coffee. This is the number that surprises people, and it is why "I can't afford the electricity" is almost never a real reason not to keep a small tank.

The chiller question
Notice what that table shows: the chiller alone is more than everything else combined. It is also the one item you may be able to avoid. A surface fan blowing across the water evaporates a thin layer and can pull temperature down by 2–3 °C for about 40 fils a month in electricity — at the cost of significantly faster evaporation and the need to top up more often. For many tanks in an air-conditioned flat, a fan plus a sensible room temperature is enough, and the chiller is a purchase you can skip entirely. The corollary is worth stating plainly: in this country, the summer cooling load, not the winter heating load, is the electricity headline for a large tank. That is the reverse of every aquarium running-cost article written for a European audience. It is also why a heater is still non-negotiable here — your AC, not the outdoor weather, sets your tank temperature, and an AC'd flat in August is colder than the same flat in January.
The hidden line: your AC setpoint
Here is the cost that never appears in these breakdowns. If you drop your flat from 26 °C to 24 °C because the tank is running warm, you are not paying for the tank — you are paying for cooling the entire flat two degrees lower. As a rough guide, each degree of setpoint reduction adds somewhere around 5–8% to air conditioning consumption. On a split unit running ten hours a day, two degrees can mean an extra 45–70 kWh a month, or 15–20 AED.
That is comparable to running the chiller, and it is the honest comparison people rarely make: cooling the whole room for the benefit of one tank is only cheaper than a chiller because you were cooling the room anyway. If you are on district cooling, the same consumption shows up on a separate bill with its own capacity charge, so it is even easier to miss.
The cheap fix is placement, not equipment. A tank out of direct sun, away from a west-facing window and not sitting in the path of kitchen heat needs far less cooling of any kind. Where you put the tank in a Dubai flat is worth more to your bill than any piece of hardware you can buy.
Bucket 2: water
Water changes cost almost nothing
DEWA residential water runs at a few fils per imperial gallon, which works out to roughly 7–10 AED per 1,000 litres including the surcharge. Put that against a real maintenance routine: a 120 litre tank changed 25% weekly uses 30 litres a week, or 130 litres a month. That is about one dirham. A large 240 litre tank on the same schedule costs about two.
So water is not a reason to skip or shrink water changes, ever. If anything the arithmetic runs the other way: the single cheapest intervention available to an aquarist is the one that costs a dirham a month and prevents most of the problems that cost real money. Evaporation is a chemistry cost, not a money cost
An open-top tank in a dry, air-conditioned Dubai room loses water fast — one to three litres a day on a mid-sized tank is normal, more with a fan running. In dirhams that is negligible. In chemistry it is not: evaporation removes water and leaves every dissolved mineral behind, so hardness and TDS creep upward week by week if you only ever top up and never change. Bucket 3: consumables
This is where the real money is, and it is almost entirely invisible because you buy it in lumps every few months rather than monthly.
- Dechlorinator — a 250–500 ml bottle costs roughly 35–75 AED and treats thousands of litres. On a 120 litre tank with weekly changes, expect one bottle every four to eight months: 5–15 AED a month. Which product and why is covered in the water conditioners guide.
- Food — a decent tub lasts a small community three to six months, but food degrades once opened, so buying the giant tub is false economy. 8–25 AED a month depending on how many mouths and whether you use frozen. What to actually feed goes through the options.
- Test reagents — a liquid master kit is 120–200 AED and lasts well over a year at sensible testing frequency. 10–15 AED a month amortised. Strips are cheaper per test and considerably less useful; what each number means explains what you are actually buying.
- Filter media — sponges get rinsed and reused for years, so this should be small. Floss and carbon, if you use them, run 10–20 AED a month. If you are replacing biological media on a schedule, stop — that is both expensive and actively harmful, as the filter guide explains.
- Fertiliser and CO2 — planted tanks only. All-in-one liquid ferts run 10–25 AED a month; pressurised CO2 refills add more depending on cylinder size and how leaky your setup is.
- Salt, medications, buffers — occasional, unpredictable, and best budgeted as a small standing allowance rather than a line item.
Bucket 4: amortisation
Equipment does not last forever, and pretending otherwise just makes the bill arrive as a surprise. Sensible replacement intervals:
- Heater — 2 to 3 years. This is the item most worth replacing preemptively rather than waiting for failure, because both failure modes are bad. Roughly 4–6 AED a month amortised.
- Filter impeller and seals — 2 to 3 years on a canister. 3–5 AED a month.
- Air pump diaphragm — 1 to 2 years, and cheap. See the air pump and oxygen guide for whether you need one at all.

- Airline, siphons, nets, magnets — a few dirhams a month collectively.
The totals
Adding all four buckets, for a tank running normally with no disasters:

Three things fall out of that table. Electricity is the smallest bucket in every row. Consumables are the largest in every row. And the cost does not scale nearly as fast as the volume does — quadrupling from 60 to 240 litres roughly doubles the monthly cost, which is a good argument against buying the smallest tank you can get away with. The costs nobody budgets
Replacing dead fish
This is the big one, and it dwarfs every line above. A tank that loses three fish a month to an uncycled filter or a summer temperature spike is costing more in livestock than in everything else combined — and that is before counting the medications bought in a panic. The cheapest month you will ever have is one where nothing dies. Buying the wrong thing twice
The undersized filter replaced after four months, the heater without a reliable thermostat, the tank too small for the fish you actually wanted — each of these is a purchase made twice. Holiday cover
Summer travel is near-universal here, and a month away needs either an automatic feeder and a pre-trip water change, or someone paid to visit. Cutting the bill without cutting corners
A few changes are worth real money and cost nothing in fish welfare. Put the light on a timer and run 6–8 hours rather than 12 — this saves electricity and reduces algae at the same time. Place the tank away from windows and heat sources so it needs less cooling. Use a lid if your setup tolerates one, to cut evaporation and top-up effort. Rinse sponges instead of buying replacements. Buy conditioner in the larger bottle size, since the per-litre cost drops sharply, but buy food in the smaller tub, since it goes stale. And keep the filter clean enough to run efficiently — a clogged canister draws more power to move less water, and a noisy filter is usually one that is working harder than it should.
What is not worth doing: skipping water changes, running without a heater, running without dechlorinator, or turning the filter off at night. Each saves a rounding error and risks the one cost that actually hurts. The bottom line
A fish tank in Dubai is cheaper to run than almost everyone assumes, and the cost sits in a different place than they expect. Electricity for a typical community tank is single-digit to low-double-digit dirhams a month. Water is a rounding error. What you actually spend money on is food, conditioner, reagents, media and the slow replacement of hardware — and, if things go wrong, on fish.
Which means the way to run a cheap tank is not to buy low-wattage equipment. It is to run a stable one: correct placement, a lid or a fan instead of a chiller where possible, a light on a timer, weekly water changes that cost a dirham, and equipment replaced before it fails rather than after.
